Maharaja Ranjit Singh Memorial Lecture on the topic India: The Unfinished Revolutions by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Karan Singh, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) at India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi attended by hundreds of Amitians
While delivering the lecture on the topic
India: The Unfinished Revolutions, Dr. Karan Singh, Member of Parliament said, “there are numerous incomplete revolutions in India, some economic and some social. Talking about the partition and the devastation that took place in the wake of partition, Dr. Singh said lot of people lost their lives during partition but the foundation of the country was so strong that even after so much turmoil India was able to retain its basic identity.”
During his informative and engrossing lecture,
Dr. Karan Singh talked about the importance of “No Confidence motion in the Parliament”, “Code of Conduct in a country”, “Exercise of voting rights by all the citizens of the country.” He expressed his concern over the grim plight of the country which is writhing under violence, terrorism, corruption, fundamental Naxalism, etc. On sharing his views about the economic scenario of the country, Dr. Singh further said that on the economic front we are growing very fast but at the same time growing poverty cannot be overlooked. We have allocated unprecedented sums of money for poverty alleviation. But the implementation is not satisfactory either due to non-governance or corruption. The growth of the Indian economy increased from 3 to 9 percent, still 40 percent people live under poverty line. Due to high growth of population there is mal-nutrition. We are adding one Australia to our population every year.
Doling out measures to fight poverty
Dr. Singh suggested that for poverty alleviation the public distribution should be efficient. There should be strict vigilance of the food grains which gets rotten lying in the godowns. We need to re-establish some forms of norms in our educational system to overcome some of the burning problems of the country. Hopefully, Private universities can very well do this job. Alcoholism, drug abuse is a problem which is destroying the young people. Smoking is another anti-social act as it affects the people around. Therefore, unfinished revolutions are not governmental. These are to be tackled by the people- the intelligentsias.
Dr. Singh concluded his speech by saying, “we are more religious and less spiritual as corruption is increasing. With my past experience, I can say that many revolutions are unfinished and to finish them and reach our destination. We have to strengthen ourselves to overcome the obstacles that are coming in the way of the country.
