Increasing Number of Mobile Devices Invite an Increase in Security Threats says Dr. John Williams, Director, Auto-ID Laboratory, MIT at Amity University during special lecture session

Amity in association with Accenture & Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) organized a lecture on ‘Geospatial Systems – The 4 Ws- What, Where, When, Why’ by Dr. John Williams, Director, Auto-ID Laboratory, MIT exclusively for Amity Students, followed by an interactive session at the Amity University Campus, Sector – 125, Noida.

Welcoming the delegation from MIT and Accenture Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Pro Vice Chancellor (Academics) stated that Accenture is an extended arm of Amity and said “Apart from the fact that there is an obvious requirement of technical education, 80 percent of an individual success is dependent on his or her behavioral skils of innovation and creativity.” She added that “constant interaction of students with the eminent global Industry professionals in various fields and efforts to keep abreast the global standards of progress in knowledge and technical know how, will help in carving out the future for the budding Industry professionals.”

Presenting his study on “Geospatial Systems – The 4 Ws- What, Where, When, Why” key spokesperson, Dr. John Williams informed that “Geospatial data encompasses a number of things today as it is corely responsible for tracking and identifying of products with the help of unique codes. Information systems are based on databases and at present there are 2 billion computers, 3 billion mobile devices, 6 billion people and 10 billion products”. Emphasizing on how to publish and subscribe Data, Dr. Williams stated that when software became web accessible (HTTP and XML) overnight every HTTP enabled machine became an object (software) request broker. Addressing the issue of Cyber Security, Dr. Williams said that “In the era of social networking activism, cyber security is not only about locking down the servers, it is rather about locking down the people aboard our network in order to prevent them from misbehaving with the published information provided by us.” He added “The mobile devices today are a mainstream item that offer the conveniences of anywhere banking, email access and social networking are which are mostly unprotected by virus protected and therefore have become the target of the overseas hackers. Mobile viruses, malformed SMS messages, Email viruses, Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and Spam pose high security threats. With the increase in the number of mobile devices, users are accessing the internet for software installations which invite further higher possibilities of risk and insecurity.”

Presenting an introduction of Accenture and MIT, Mr. Ajit Kumar, Senior Executive, Accenture informed that “Accenture is a global consulting technology and outsourcing company with capabilities across all industries and business functions and has revenue in excess of $ 21.6 billion US Dollars. Accenture in India is about 60,000 people who are spread across the locations of Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata.” Sharing the core values of the company, he pointed out the similarities of them with those of Amity, Such as ‘ stewardship – building a heritage for future generations, best people – attracting and developing the best talent, one global network – mobilizing the power of global team, respect for the individual - valuing diversity, ensuring an interesting and inclusive environment and integrity – inspiring trust and acting ethically and laid stress on students who would be working with Accenture to follow these values.

The program was followed by a vivid interactive session between Dr. Williams and students of Amity wherein issues like “Monitoring of the usage of available data, Challenge of data collection and secure storage and pitfalls of social networking” were discussed.

Also present during the program were Maj, Gen. R. K Dhawan, Director, International Affair Division, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Rana, Director, Amity Technical Placement Centre, faculty members and Heads of Institutions, Heads of Departments and Heads higher officials of Accenture India and US.
