“ India still needs to work hard in Science and Technology to be respected amongst other nations”, avers Justice Markandey Katju –Supreme Court of India during Grand “Convocation 2010” of Amity

“There was a time when India was leading the whole world in Science and Technology. We invented the concept of “Zero” and we invented plastic surgery two thousand years ago. We were far ahead in mathematics, medicine, astronomy and in engineering sklls. Now, the West is far ahead of us. How did this happen, when we were far ahead of them at one time?,” questioned emphatically Justice Markandey Katju –Supreme Court of India, who was conferred “Honorary Doctorate Degree of Law” by Amity University during the Grand “Convocation 2010” at Amity

Addressing the students, Justice Katju lauded the efforts of Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President Amity Group and said, “ had he not set up Amity University and Amity Colleges, the result would have been that a large number of children would have gone without higher education, because the number of seats in the Government colleges is too little and you know our country’s population has expanded and even more than that the demand for education and particularly higher education has gone up by leaps and bounds.”

Justice Markandey Katju called upon the students to try finding an answer to the perplexing question, and termed it as “ Needham’s Grand Question”. Prof. Joseph Needham in England wrote on Science and civilization of China and posed a grand question in his writing that why India and China which was far ahead of the entire world at one time is left behind now. Justice Katju averred, “ the time has come for India to find an answer to “ Needham’s Grand Question”. We are far behind because our country is largely poor. We are not respected because our country is poor. At one point of time, Chinese or Japanese were called yellow races. Today, nobody dares call the Chinese or Japanese yellow races because they are powerful industrial nations.”

Calling young graduants and endeavoring to answer the self posed question, Justice Katju said, “if you want respect, you have to make your nation prosperous and highly developed. That is only possible if science and technology is spread to every nook and corner of the country. You have to develop the scientific outlook and abolish superstitions and anti- rituals. You have to develop a modern mind. Being modern does not mean wearing modern clothes, being modern means having a rational, logical, a questioning and scientific mind. We must make our nation powerful and highly industrialized, which is only possible by promoting Science and Technology in the country. That alone will make our country respected in the community of nations.”
