During her lecture,
Dr. Aditi Roy Mukherjee informed that “12 % of world’s smokers are from India causing 8 lacs death per year and 50% of that smoking population is under the age of 24. The first modern nationwide ban in smoking was during the Nazi regime which was followed by a research on risks of direct smoking and passive smoking during the later part of the 20th century.” She added “Medical researches focused on tobacco smoking have shown that it is the greatest cause of causing death in US and worldwide.” Sharing her views on the increasing rate of smoking in the youth Dr. Aditi Roy Mukherjee said that “Half of the smoking population that took to smoking during their adolescence have been found to continue to do so till they encountered with any major health hazards. The reasons behind the increase in the number of smokers in the younger demography are mainly the marketing strategies of the tobacco companies and the peer pressure experienced by youth. Besides causing severe damage to lungs and heart, smoking makes a psychological dependence on Nicotine and also weakens our immune system to the extent of it becoming prone to Tuberculosis.” Dr. Aditi Roy Mukherjee advised the students to understand the dreadful adversities of smoking disguised in its fake image of glamour and style before it is too late and stated that “the combination of strong will power and several methods developed through constant medical research such as cold turkey method (abrupt stopping), gradual reduction method, Nicotine replacement theory, anti smoking pills, low level Laser therapy and natural methods can effectively help the existing victims of Nicotine.”
The lecture was followed by an interactive session between
Dr. Aditi Roy Mukherjee and the students of Amity Law School. Also present during the lecture were the faculty members of Amity Law School.
