Over 500 Students across the world endeavor to draft “A Charter of a New World” during “Amity International Model United Nations (AIMUN)”Conference
Amity International Schools in support with UNESCO and UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan kick started India’s Biggest three day International High School Model UN “Amity International Model United Nations (AIMUN) Conference” from November 19 - 21, 2010 at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida.
Over 500 high school students from over 52 Schools of India and 6 International Schools located in Denmark, Germany, Hungary, South Korea, Mauritius, Maldives and India are participating in AIMUN, simulating the proceedings of Security Council, Crisis Committee, General Assembly, HRC, ECOSOC and UNESCO
Chief Guest Mr. Armoogum Parasuraman- Director of UNESCO in India, Dr. Aiyagiri Rao- Advisor, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools, Ms. Divya Chauhan, Chairperson, Amity Institute of Fashion Technology and Maj. Gen. K Jai Singh, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh inaugurated AIMUN 2010.
Mr. Armoogum Parasuraman- Director of UNESCO in India while addressing the august gathering said that AIMUN marks the realization of our vision for a better tomorrow and is a call to each and every person of this beautiful planet called earth to support AIMUN. While speaking about the cultural difference of the countries Mr. Parasuraman said that cooperation across boundaries through such platforms is possible as the mission and vision of development of all the countries are same. But the task is enormous and individual potential counts a lot. Therefore, one has to believe in self is essential and follow the foot steps of the great Mahatma Gandhi. Mr. Parasuraman asserted that all over the globe people are working tirelessly to bring peace and harmony in the world. AIMUN is also working on the same line by promoting international cooperation.
While delivering the inaugural address Dr. Aiyagiri Rao- Advisor, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India said major global issues will be debated by the young minds participating from the various parts of the globe. Public health, climate change, drinking water and various political and economic issues would be part of the conference. Dr. Aiyagiri said, that if we keep comparing the developments that are taken place in various sectors, we can develop ourselves in a planned manner. He gave an comparative analysis of India and China. He said that according to a study, it is calculated that by 2032 Indian youth’s growth will be at an average 25%. While China it will be 30-35%. Dr. Aiyagiri concluded his speech with a piece of advice to the students, that is, students should understand the problems minutely and try to come up with good solutions.
Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools said that in this 21st century world abuzz with social and cultural imperatives, AIMUN provides the perfect platform for exchanging dialogues, communication and understanding across generations. It prepares the young diplomats of today who are the stake holders of tomorrow, to be informed and sensitized global citizens. It will help the students to gain public speaking and decision-making skils.

Ms. Fathmath Nabaha M. Wahydh, a delegate from Maldives representing South Korea in General Assembly expressed her joy and excitement for being the part of the mega cross cultural event where she will be discussing about “ Climate Change and Sustainability” and “ Safe Disposal of Nuclear Waste” in Korea. Talking about her preparation, Ms. Fathmath, who is participating in International MUN for the first time, said, “ I have done thorough research about South Korea for 2-3 months through Internet and Newspaper, trying to comprehend the problems faced by the country and its people with special reference to Climate Change and Safe Disposal of Nuclear waste.”
Amity Group of Schools together with The Global Times – a Student Newspaper, in association with United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) organized a ‘Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Prastuti Pratiyogita’ for underprivileged children belonging to different NGOs/ MCD schools during the occasion of Amity International Model United Nations (AIMUN) 2010.
Dr. Neelam Sinha, Advisor, Extramarks and Chief Guest for the Pratiyogita while addressing the august gathering said “we will never enjoy development without security. A community will feel secure only when its basic necessities are fulfilled. Protection and promotion of children rights are crucial. United Nation is giving more stress on it. It is not only mental and physical support but also legal aid is given significance.
The Guest of Honor, Ms. Rineeta Naik, Assistant information Officer, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in her address spoke on the importance of education in a person’s life. She said that NGOs plays a crucial role in combating the various problems faced by the country. The Millennium Development Goals can be properly performed by the NGOs.
Amitasha, Deepalaya, Smile, Prayas and several other NGOs shared their views on Hunger, Poverty, Infant and Maternal Mortality, AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and other vexing issues plaguing the society. The students through their presentations in the form of speech, dialogue, skit etc shed light on the challenges, policies with reference to the goals, review the progress and suggested course corrections to meet the 2015 deadline.
The children from various NGOs through skits, plycards and discussions presented the 8 Millennium Development Goals. All the children were given participation certificates. Amitasha, Noida bagged the first prize in their performance, Amitasha, Gurgaon, second prize and Leadership Development International bagged the third prize.
Various International issues that will be discussed during three day Conference include “Situation in Afghanistan-Pakistan” and “Peacekeeping Challenges” in Security Council, “Climate Change and Sustainable Development” and “Safe Disposal of Nuclear Waste” in General Assembly, “Global Financial Crisis” and “Reduction of Poverty” in ECOSOC, “Rights of Prisoners and Detainees” and “Human Trafficking” in Human Rights Council, “HIV and AIDS” and “Return of Cultural Artifacts to Countries of Origin” in UNESCO
The Indian schools participating in the Conference include APJ, Jalandhar representing Syria and Niger, British Co- Ed High School, Patiala representing Mangolia, Ukraine, Nicaragua, APL Global School , Chennai representing Peru and Slovakia, Indus International School, Bangalore representing Canada, Vidya Niketan School, Bangalore representing Mexico, Oakridge International School, Hyderabad representing Vietnam, UAE and Romania, Army Public School, Noida representing Israel, DPS, Dwarka representing Norway, DPS, Ghaziabad representing Brazil, all Amity International schools located in Gurgaon, Sector- 43 and 46, Noida, Saket, Pushp Vihar, Mayur Vihar and Vasundhra etc.
The valediction of the Conference will take place on Sunday November 21, 2010 wherein, the outstanding delegates in each committee will be honored with “Best Delegate and High Commendation Award”, the delegates who submitted the Best Paper in their respective committee prior to the conference will be given “Best Position Paper Award” and the delegation which excels in all areas will be given “Best Delegation Award”.
