Finals of Inter Zone University Chess Tournament (Men and Women) commences at Amity
The much awaited and spectacular finals of “Inter Zone University Chess Tournament (Men and Women)” by Association of Indian Universities- AIU (Inter University Sports Board of India) started at Amity University, Noida today at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida
12 teams are participating from various Universities located in 4 different zones including SRM University Chennai and Madras University, Chennai from South Zone; Delhi University, Punjab University, Chandigarh, CSJM University, Kanpur and Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar from North Zone; Mumabi University, Mumbai, Savitribai Phule University, Pune; North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon from West Zone and KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar; Calcutta University, West Bengal and Patna University from East Zone.
Declaring the Tournament open, Dr. B Shukla- Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh said that it is a proud privilege for Amity University to host the prestigious finals of Inter Zone University Chess Tournament (Men and Women). She stressed that although all Sports are good but Chess makes the players mentally agile, decisive and true leaders. She remarked that Chess involves a lot of concentration and even a single hurried move could be the last one in the game of Kings and Pawns. She called upon the players to participate in the finals with Sportsmanship because it is participation in such a reputed tournament that matters rather than victory or defeat which is ephemeral.
Sharing information about the tournament, Dr. Kalpana Sharma- Director, Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences said that it is for the first time that Amity University is hosting such a premier Chess Tournament which will culminate on November 14, 2014. During the Tournament, each team would have to play 5 matches and the final four teams selected would compete in World Chess Tournament representing India.
The Tournament is played as per Swiss league system, wherein all the teams will play all rounds without any knock out. The final four teams will be selected after the last round by amassing the scores gathered in different rounds by the concerned team members.
