Experts deliberate upon “Sustainability and Economic Resilience in Urban Architecture”, on World Architecture Day at Amity University
Amity School of Architecture & Planning, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida, organized a one-day Symposium on the theme, “Resilient Urban Economies: Cities as Drivers of Growth and Recovery”, to mark the 38th World Habitat Day and World Architecture Day.
Addressing the gathering during the Panel Discussion, Ar. Anurag Roy, Former principal Gateway College of Architecture & Design, averred, “World Architecture Day reminds us of our responsibility towards nature. Buildings and Infrastructure should be developed keeping in mind the impact of construction on the environment. Per capita space demand is increasing therefore, there is a need to rationalize the size of architecture and space. Also, the materials should be selected very carefully so as to cause no pollution, thereby safeguarding mother earth.”
Sharing his views on the occasion, Ar. Premendra Raj Mehta, Chairman, National Accreditation Board of Education & Training Council of India, Ministry of Commerce, GoI, stated, “The core of sustainability and resilience lies in ethics, and it requires a fundamental thinking about how much do we care for humanity and nature. We must be in sync with the society and environment in order to create sustainable buildings.”
Emphasizing upon the need for sustainable architecture, Dr. Atul Gupta, President- Architects Association, Noida, Zone & LEED Green Associate of USGBC, said, “Terror and climate change are the biggest challenges when it comes to urban development. Therefore, building resilience is extremely important when it comes to new construction. The structures must be robust and strong so that they can bear the challenges of climate change. Also, building structures in harmony with nature is essential in order to protect the environment.”
Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor Amity University Uttar Pradesh stated, “Urban architecture needs to be resilient and sustainable so that it can withstand the ravages of natural calamities such as floods, landslides, etc. Ancient buildings and monuments were very strong and have endured various natural calamities which have occurred over the years. Therefore, use of technology in urban architecture along with sustainability is the key to addressing the challenges of urban architecture.”
Delivering the Welcome Address, Dr. D. P. Singh, Director Amity School of Architecture and Planning, said, “The one-day Symposium aims to address the challenges of urban planning and architecture and the Symposium will be highly beneficial for the students since the experts will share important insights on the topic, thereby raising some pertinent problems and solutions for urban architecture. “
During the one-day symposium, a workshop, debate competition and an exhibition by the students of Amity School of Architecture and Planning, were also organized wherein the students participated enthusiastically.
