Veteran Lt Gen DV Kalra, PVSM, AVSM (Retd) pursues PhD Research Programme from Amity Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, at the age of 88
Going back to study days, Veteran Lt Gen DV Kalra, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), has joined PhD Research Programme of Amity Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, at the age of 88.
The General Officer has been a top achiever in his military career and epitomized stellar attributes of leadership, manifested organizational skills in his innovative driven professional pursuits with rare dedication, contributing with veritable pathbreaking ideologies and consistency to well embodied growth oriented organizational interest. He had the passionate urge to do his doctorate in philosophy all through his military odyssey, but after having heard of Amity Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, nurturing the largest number of military officers and other students from diverse background in PhD, he took the enlightened decision to register for the same at 88 years of age and ostensibly becomes the oldest veteran to undertake the Doctoral Programme in Defence Studies under the mentorship and supervisory capacity of Lt Gen (Dr) SK Gadeock, AVSM (Retd), Director General Amity Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies and Amity Centre for Defence & Strategic Analysis(ACDSA), Amity University.
As an octogenarian, Lt. Gen Kalra continues to display the messianic zeal, besides possessing the intrinsic intellectual abilities to do the research work on “Critical Supply Chain in Conflict Zones: A Case Study of Ukraine Russia War” with due cerebral analysis in its contemporary perspective. Expressing his profound gratitude for the opportunity and sagacious guidance given by the iconic educationist of India Dr Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group, Lt. Gen. D.V. Kalra said, “I am extremely delighted and honored to pursue PhD Research Programme from a prestigious institution like Amity. The urge in me to study further has not diminished even at this age and I’m extremely grateful to Amity University for giving me this wonderful opportunity and supporting me in my endeavours so that, through my research work, I am able to address the high level of policy makers to sensitize the people about supply chain logistics.”
Lt Gen Kalra, Retd from the Indian Army on 31 March 1993 and during his long and meritorious service of thirty-nine years, held various coveted appointments in the Army like Major General Operational Logistics in a Command, Commandant and Principal, College of Materials Management, rising to become the Director General Ordnance Services. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Defence Studies and Master’s Degree in Philosophy (MPhil) from Madras University, M.A. Political Science, Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Materials), MSc (Munitions Technology) from the Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya Jabalpur, besides technical qualifications from the UK. A Graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the General Officer also attended the Long Defence Management Course and the National Defence College Course with outstanding grades at all levels. He specializes in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. He was the Dean Faculty of Management, Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur, Consultant Ministry of Defence, Government of India, Consultant Comptroller and Auditor General of India and Member National Audit Advisory Board.
The General Officer commanded an Ordnance Unit in the Congo, led a Team of 30 selected Ordnance Officers deputed to Nigeria. He has traveled extensively worldwide to all continents covering over 25 countries both during service and post-retirement. He is Fellow of Indian Management Association, erstwhile Fellow, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK), and Distinguished Member and Member Board of Studies Indian Institute of Materials Management. Post retirement he became a visiting faculty in Supply Chain Management for various management programs in several institutions.
In addition, Lt Gen Kalra has few publications to his credit, having authored a number of professional papers and presented the same at various national and international seminars, His book “Supply Chain Management Strategy, Planning and Operation” co-authored with two American authors is a standard text in Indian and South Asian Management Institutes. The General Officer was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva by the President of India in 1988 and 1992 respectively.
