Amity Institute of Behavioural Health & Allied Sciences (AIBHAS), Amity University Uttar Pradesh, is conducting a National Seminar on “Trauma Informed Care- Robust Theory to Recent Practices” from 13th to 14th July 2023. The seminar is being attended by over 200 participants from diverse organizations such as Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Christ University Bangalore, Civil Hospital Roorkee, BITS Pilani, and AIIMS Delhi, amongst others.
Sharing her views on the topic, “Understanding Trauma, Trauma response, Symptoms, and Neurobiology of Trauma, Dr. Sujata Satpathy, Professor, department of Psychiatry, AIIMS, New Delhi, stated, “Trauma means “wound” in Greek and the response to trauma is biological even though it stems from a psychological source. Any intense shock which is a threat to the individual’s existence and has a long-lasting impact on the psyche of an individual can be termed as trauma. It can be caused by any life event including disasters, accidents, bullying, violence, torture, life threatening illness, etc. The key symptoms of trauma are changes in behaviour, mood, emotions, perceptions, thought and cognition, which could result in disbelief and shock, fear and anxiety, emotional numbness, feeling helpless, insomnia, amongst many others. There are three main types of trauma- acute trauma, which occurs due to a single episode in one’s life, chronic trauma- which keeps occurring repeatedly for a long period of time and complex trauma- which is caused due to multiple traumatic events. Therapies, counselling and medicines will only help the patients if they are treated with utmost care, empathy, and compassion.”
Advising the participants, Dr. S.K. Srivastava, Mentor, Amity Institute of Behavioral Health and Allied Sciences, stated, "The Seminar will be highly insightful since renowned experts will be addressing the participants on various aspects of trauma. Therefore, the participants must utilize this opportunity to interact with the experts and gain new insights on the topic.”
Highlighting the significance of the Programme, Dr. Rushi, Professor & Director, Amity Institute of Behavioral Health and Allied Sciences, said, “many cases of trauma are reported in Trauma centres every day and mental health of people is deteriorating day by day. An integrated approach in clinical practice must be adopted to cure trauma patients which should include a shift from treatment-centric approach to a healing-centric approach. The Seminar will equip the participants with knowledge and practical skills, which will enable them to make the treatment better and more effective.”
