Amity School of Business (ASB), Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida, organized a two- day International Conference on "Global Business Strategies for Sustainability" (GLOBUSS-2023), from 19th-20th January 2023, with the theme “Managing Businesses in the Age of Fake News & Trolling”.
Highlighting the significance of ‘Checking Misinformation’ and ‘Fake News’, Guest of Honour, Ms. Charulata Ravi Kumar, Managing Director, Accenture India, stated, “Today, every person carries information with them therefore, in one sense all of us are information carriers. However, there is so much of misinformation and fake news all around us due to the presence of social media. Fake news has a ripple effect when spread through trolls, crawls, social media accounts. One can spot fake news by questioning the source, reading between the lines and analyzing the news, knowing the background and being well-informed. The media has to stop depending on social media for factual news and use fact checkers. One must know when to speak and when to be silent and stop fake news & trolls by one’s actions and authenticity, and not by anger, frustration, retaliation and being impatient.”
Addressing the gathering during the Inaugural Session, Distinguished Guest, Dr. Anurag Batra, Chairman, BW Business World, averred, “The world has changed drastically post the pandemic and people have become more aware of the value of human life and ‘Gig Economy’ and ‘Entrepreneurship’ are on the rise today. Even in this digital era, the significance of human touch, face-to-face interactions and relationships cannot be ignored. We are living in the era of ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, however, being abreast of the technological advancement should not mean that we lose human relationships.” He called upon the students to embrace the three Hs – Hard work, Hope and Hustle and shun the negative Cs of – Complaining, Criticizing and Comparing. He also advised the students to focus on positivity, care for parents, keep their commitments and contribute to the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Keynote Speaker, Mr. Jayant Shah, Executive Director - Academy of Indian Marketing (AIM), asserted, “Trolling and Fake News are not only rampant in the internet age, but have existed for several decades. However, earlier there were no means to verify news but today many tools, organizations, etc. are available to verify news and the reach of fake news is highly widespread. However, there is a difference between misinformation and disinformation, wherein, misinformation is not a deliberate attempt to spread fake news and usually occurs accidentally, but disinformation is a deliberate way of spreading wrong information. So, one must be cautious and aware before trusting any news, especially if it comes through a social media source.”
Inaugurating the Conference, Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida, stated, “Fake News or misinformation spreads rapidly and in today’s scenario, it is very difficult to understand what is fake and what is a fact. Misinformation about products and services damages their image and impacts their demand in a big way. Therefore, creating awareness, relying less on social media and more on wisdom and trusted sources of news, is very important.”
