Experts deliberate on “Emerging issues on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability”, at Amity
Amity Institute of Environmental Sciences(AIES), Amity University Uttar Pradesh organized an insightful Seminar on the theme, “Emerging Issues on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability”, with the aim to monitor and manage the emerging issues of climate change and to focus on environmental sustainability.
Speaking about “Environmental Sustainability”, Dr. Sandeep Kumar Shukla, Research Officer, Central Water Commission, Delhi, said, “Mining activities, industrial activities, deforestation and agrochemicals have aggravated the problem of climate change. However, a few steps have been taken by the government such as banning the use of single use plastic, introduction and promotion of electric vehicles, towards achieving environmental sustainability. The need of the hour is to protect the environment at any cost by adopting a sustainable lifestyle and acting as responsible citizens of the country.”
Highlighting the steps which need to be taken to combat Climate Change, Mr. Avinash Kumar Balyan, Executive Director, Earthood Services Pvt. Ltd. (ESPL), stated, “Shifting to renewable energy sources in all key sectors, reducing food loss and waste, stopping deforestation, using electric vehicles and public transport, subsidizing low-carbon alternatives for urban planning and protecting the natural resources, mainly air and water, can considerably combat climate change.”
Shri N. Vasudevan (IFS), National Project Coordinator, Climate Change Project, UNDP-GCF (Green Climate Fund), asserted, “Conserving natural resources and bio-diversity forests, increasing the use of public transport, formulating policies to increase the share of renewables in the energy sector, promoting sustainable agriculture, using reusable products and encouraging people to planet trees are some of the steps which can help us in achieving a sustainable environment.”
Emphasizing upon the “Call to Action” to overcome the challenges of climate change, Mr. Ratnesh, Executive Director, Development Professional with a Penchant to Learn and Implement, United Nations Global Compact [UNGC], asserted, “Peer Learning Groups at the UN Global Compact create a safe space for companies to share their best practices and challenges on critical sustainability issues with like-minded professionals, while gaining access to industry experts and unique networking opportunities. Therefore, the students must apply for membership of UNGC in order to create substantial impact by working towards creating a sustainable environment. However, the most important part of any problem-solving exercise is to take action as no amount of planning and strategizing can be fruitful without taking necessary action for its implementation.”
Addressing the gathering, Prof. D. K. Bandyopadhyay, Mentor, Amity Institute of Environmental Sciences, Amity University, averred, “Planet Earth is being exploited and harmed by human beings on a very large scale due to industrialization, deforestation, carbon emission and many other factors, which is a major concern across the world. We must find a balance between planet, people and profit and find practical solutions in order to save the planet. Amity has already taken several steps and initiatives in this direction, including, green campus, installation of solar rooftop panels and ensuring plastic-free campus, to name a few. It is imperative to conserve the natural resources by using environment-friendly products.”
Speaking about the significance of the Seminar, Prof. (Dr.) Tanu Jindal, Group Additional Pro Vice Chancellor (R&D), said, “The seminar is highly significant to understand the several issues which need to be addressed the impact of environmental pollution on climate and its sustainable management. The need of the hour is that all the organizers, scientists, experts, and other stakeholders across the world must come together to combat environmental pollution and climate change through mass awareness, technology, policies, legal perspectives and sustainable solutions.”
The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session where the experts answered the queries of the students and felicitation of guests.
