11th Amity International Moot Court Competition 2021
The 11th Amity International Moot Court Competition 2021, a simulation based on a leading issue of Public International Law dealing with extradition, asylum and diplomatic immunities and other issues, was won by the students of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala. National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi bagged the second position. The competition conferred a unique opportunity for the participants to understand the various conducts and procedures of International Law, and simultaneously apply them in their own unique and creative methodologies, creating noteworthy handy arguments.
The three day paper less competition witnessed eminent dignitaries from the legal fraternity and the participation of over 100 teams from across the country and internationally, including 8 National Law Universities, 20 International University, 68 Indian Colleges and law colleges from Japan, Philippines, South Africa, Kenya, Nepal, Brazil, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives etc. An outstanding level of legal deliberation was displayed by the participating teams with the finest law students coming together and presenting their arguments.
Ms. Erika Hennequet, Lecturer of International Law, University of Sheffield, UK while judging the final round of the competition called upon young students to remain positive towards their profession. “Sometimes mooting could be a scary endeavor because the mooters do not know what the judges would ask, and how they would be assessed, but the participants should be gracious and patient with the judges and put their best foot forward with their knowledge”, averred Ms. Hennequet.
Guest of Honor, Hon’ble Justice Jasmeet Singh, Judge, Delhi High Court highlighted few life lessons learnt and laid stress on how lawyers and judges are playing an important role in shaping today’s society. Law today has become a profession by choice and has overtaken many other professions. “ Participating in moot court competition is a first step for upcoming lawyers as it helps in shaping their thinking and their argumentative abilities”. He suggested students to love and enjoy what they are doing, pursue their passions as well and also develop a hobby like painting, listening music etc. because these hobbies can be a great stress buster.
Hon’ble Justice Jyoti Singh, Judge, Delhi High Court congratulated Amity for organizing this moot court competition despite the global challenge of pandemic. She mentioned that during this moot court students have learned about how to deal with complex issues like Public International Law which serves as a huge pedestal to transform them into well groom lawyers. The Moot Court Competition is the closet of the real proceedings and is a great platform to gain confidence with practical learning experiences. She advised students to work on their mistakes but never quit.
Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group shared that a moot court competition teaches a lot, prepares students for real- life courtroom experience. While talking about his vision to transform India into a global superpower, he talked about the importance of law and order as a very significant aspect and advised students to attain perfection in their learning of the law sections and practice the art of arguments. Sharing a valuable tip with students, Dr. Chauhan said the study of law is incomplete without the judgment of the judge. He advised students to read the judgments and understand the hard work and efforts which the judges have put in writing these judgments.
Mr. Sébastien Lafrance, Crown Counsel, Public Prosecution Service of Canada said the field of law requires many sacrifices but it is worth the efforts once the fair decision is granted which gives immense satisfaction to the lawyer irrespective of whether he has won or lost. He emphasized on students to work hard and put in efforts to rise in their career.
Hon’ble Justice Mr. Siddharth, Judge, Allahabad High Court said Law is a profession which is known by practice and not just by reading books since one has to apply law to the living persons. Moot Court Competition gives you an experience to present the case in court and with practice only, one can give one’s 100% to the profession. While stressing on the importance of litigation he said , the lawyers and judges always see the society’s expectations firsthand and therefore have to be precise and focused during arguments in order to present the case and ensure justice.
Hon’ble Justice Amit Bansal, Judge, Delhi High Court congratulated the students, faculty and all participating teams for holding such a prestigious event. He appreciated the Amity university’s efforts in aligning legal dignitaries through paperless forum and how university is working towards brining a new revolution amongst budding lawyers. Justice Bansal shared his views on the changing modes of mooting and judicial proceedings strongly advocating mooting to become a mandatory part of every law student’s curriculum. He further stated how this competition hones the research skills of students and serve as a perfect training ground for them to develop as strong lawyers.
Dr. Mariana Ferolla Vallandro Do Valle, Teaching Assistant, Geneva of Humanitarians Studies, Geneva, Switzerland encouraged students to participate, as much as possible, in moot courts to broaden their legal horizon. There is sometime too much pressure but you will deal with everything with time, commented Dr. Mariana.
Dr. Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University said all Amitians are trained to become leaders, not followers. Moot Court Competitions unbolt fresh grounds and blazes a trail of a forthcoming novel experience. He advised students to make wise decisions and work very hard as it would affect the lives of so many other people. He congratulated the students on choosing the path of law, which is not easy, but millions of people would rely on their decisions, and advised them to work with complete dedication and zeal.
During the event, a souvenir about the competition was also launched during the occasion. Also present on the occasion were Prof. (Dr.) D.K Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School; (Prof.) Dr. Shefali Raizada, Additional Director, Amity Law School; (Prof.) Dr. Aditya Tomer, Joint Head, Amity Law School along with faculty, staff and thousands of students connected virtually.
