Amity Celebrates Ozone Day

Amity Institute of Environmental Toxicology, Safety and Management (AIETSM), organized a webinar on "Ozone Day” under “Global Warming and Climate Change” Cluster. During the program, AIETSM has also organized a Poster, Article and Poem Writing Competitions on Climate Change, Ozone Layer, Effects of Global Warming and Impact on Health amongst others.

Sharing her views on "Ozone: Position Effect and Transport Modeling" Prof. Manju Mohan, Head, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Hauz Khas, New Delhi said that “we all have gathered here for a good cause to save our earth. . Preservation of the ozone layer is necessary to save life on earth. The depletion of the ozone layer is not only the cause of climate change but also the cause of many diseases amongst human beings. This is also affecting our crops and reducing the productivity of cereals, cotton, soybean, rice and wheat etc. The problem with ozone layer is increasing day by day, leading to increase in the temperature of earth”. Suggesting measures, Prof Mohan said Mitigation measures have to be implemented in more effective ways to conserve ozone.

Sharing his views on "Ozone for Life: An Indian Prospective” said Dr. Siddhartha Singh, Scientist 'E’ (Establishment), In-charge (Ozone & Air Quality Unit), EMRC, India Meteorological Department said ozone gas molecule is made up of three atoms of oxygen. In the absence of ozone layer, ultraviolet rays cause diseases like skin diseases, eye diseases and lack of immunity etc. and damages the environment also. Depletion of stratospheric ozone will bring solar rays inside the Earth's atmosphere and increase the temperature. Dr Singh said that the gases emitted from refrigerators, pesticides, vehicles, air-conditions etc. affect Ozone. Chlorofluorocarbons have a life of about 100 years. He suggested, ways to reduce emission such as stop oneself car during signals, AC and refrigerator should be repaired before leaking, protect oneself from sunburn etc.

Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President, Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) & DG, ADSI and Chancellor, Amity University Chhattisgarh said Ozone Day is being celebrated all over the world today. Due to the changing environment, increasing pollution and its impact on health, the protection of the ozone layer has become even more necessary. At Amity, we always encourage students, researchers and scientists to do research towards the protection of the ozone layer.

Sharing his thoughts, Prof. (Dr.) Sushil K. Tyagi, Former Addl. Director, CPCB (MoEFCC), Govt. of India, Professor, Faculty of Science (Dept. of Chemistry), OPJS University, Rajasthan, Executive Director (Technical) & Trustee, IDC Foundation, New Delhi said this day is a day for global attention and action on an important environmental issue. Dr. Tyagi, said ozone layer is getting depleted for the last 15 years, but during the time of Covid there has been a decrease in the depletion of ozone layer. Describing the reasons for the depletion of the ozone layer, he said that sun spots and stratospheric wind are natural causes whereas pollution, are the human factors.

Prof. (Dr.) D.K. Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School and Prof. Tanu Jindal, Group Additional Pro Vice Chancellor (R&D), Director, Amity Institute of Environmental Toxicology, Safety and Management were also present during the webinar.
