Training program on “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Higher Education”
Training program on the theme “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Higher Education” was inaugurated at Amity University, Uttar Pradesh. The Three- day virtual training program is being organized by Amity School of Natural Resource & Sustainable Development (ASNRSD) in association with National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India.
During the program, Dr. Satendra Singh, International DRR Expert, FAO, UN NENA RO, Cario, Egypt was conferred upon Honorary Professorship by Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group.
While delivering lecture on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Management in India Dr. Satendra Singh said that disaster management reduction is the most important part of disaster management. By making the students aware, we will take big steps in disaster management. Dr. Singh also briefed about different types of disasters like geo-physical including earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes etc. Man-made disaster includes fire, accident, gas leakage, nuclear radiation etc. Dr. Singh said that difference between disaster management and development has to be understood. At the primary level of disaster risk reduction he suggested four priorities of action which are Understanding the risk including its every dimension, capacity and unveiling. Strengthening the disaster management policy and planning, Investing in DRR resilience and Enhancing preparedness for response.
Dr. Ashok K Chauhan averred that if the disaster happens there is huge loss of public money. But we Indians are capable of reducing the risk of any kind of disaster. He also mentioned that Amity prepares students for disaster management by conducting mock drills etc. Amity also makes students aware of such programs and motivates them for research to overcome the challenges.
Speaking on the occasion, Maj. Gen Manoj K Bindal, Executive Director, National Institute of Disaster Management said that “disaster always affects human life, work, property, health etc. Together with academic institutions, we must develop the culture of disaster management preparedness. Every account holder like administration, policy, academia, NGO and community have to work together to achieve this goal. The role of academic institution is most important in motivating the young minds to play an active role in disaster management. Maj Gen also said the need of the hour is to include the views of the youth in the policy making. This training programme will encourage Amity students to research.
During the training program experts will share their views on the topic of ‘Need of Inclusion of DRR into Higher Education by Prof. Pradeep Sahni, IGNOU; Mitigating the impact of Covid 19 by Dr. Muzaffar Ahmed, Former Member, NDMA; Disaster Safety of Academics Campuses/ Universities by Maj. Gen Dr. VK Naik; Research on Resilience Building by Dr. Sarabjit Singh; Blending Traditional Knowledge and Modern Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction by Dr. Anand Sharma, ADG, IMD, New Delhi; Disaster Preparedness and Response by Dr. VS Prakash, Founder Former, Special Director, KSNDMC, Bangalore.
