Training workshop cum FDP on Basic Disaster Management inaugurated at Amity University

 A three-day training workshop on Basic Disaster Management was organised by Amity School of Applied Sciences along with National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM). The workshop aimed to understand the basic disaster management concepts and their importance for the society along with discussing the current challenges and gaps in recent interventions in disaster risk management.   

 

Prof. Anil K. Gupta, HEAD, ECDRM, NIDM, talked about the implicit link between environment and disaster. He gave reference to the Bhopal Gas Tragedy that led to many environmental challenges. He stated that environmental changes that are great risks to disaster including environmental degradation, climate change. He shared that disasters are the major impediment to environment management process. Prof. Gupta shared about including sustainability issues in disaster relief process as it was a growing concern. He suggested using the module developed by UGC on disaster management to be incorporated and have courses on disaster risk management be integrated with the existing programmes. He stressed on taking an integrated approach and shift in thinking process to develop a culture of safety and prevention.   

Prof. Dr. Suneel Dhaneshwar, Pro VC, AMITY, University UP Lucknow shared that preparedness for disasters is still inadequate. He averred that with the presence of organizations like NIDM, people are -pre-informed about impending disasters to mitigate the risk and its effects. He called for imparting a basic course on disaster management for the students of Amity University.  

Prof. Dr. Asita Kulshreshtha, Director, Amity School of Applied Sciences Amity University, UP, Lucknow welcomed the online gathering and shared insights on the role of NIDM. She stated that preparedness is the only way to face disasters and the session aimed to sensitize individuals and organizations against disasters and disaster risk reduction.   

Mr. Ashish Kumar Panda, NIDM shared insights on the present status & do’s and don’t regarding Covid-19. He shared the current scenario of the global pandemic with more than 95K cases coming though recovery and death rate is reducing in the country. He stated the benefits of home quarantine that is leading to less load on hospitals and get better care by family, saving on huge hospital bills and maintain emotional health by being cared for at home. He stressed on the importance on enhancing immunity and shared measures by using various foods, maintaining an active lifestyle & destressing. Mr. Panda also detailed about safe use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. He also laid emphasis on basic concepts of Disaster Management & Institutional Mechanism.
