Connecting to life: Preventing Suicide

 Lecture by Dr. Sunil Mittal - CEO and Prominent senior Psychiatrist - CIMBS was delivered on the topic- Connecting to life: Preventing Suicide. While addressing the virtual gathering, Dr Sunil said that Suicide is the leading cause of death for people between ages 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides. Suicide prevention should involve every single person whether it is media, family, etc. There is tremendous pressure on mind that blinds logic, forcing a conclusion of escape and desperate attempt to escape suffering that seems unbearable. Suicidal person can't see any way of finding relief except death. Most people who commit suicide don't want to die- they just want to stop getting hurt and the pain to stop. Most are conflicted about ending life, they wish there was an alternative to committing suicide but just can't see on. When assessing somebody there are some terminology which can be check with the victim like completed suicide, attempted suicide, suicidal gesture, deliberate self-harm, and suicidal ideation.  Cyber suicide is a suicide pact made between individuals who meet on the internet. Copycapt suicide is a type in which a peer group or celebrity or publicised suicide serves as a model for next in absence of protective factors. 

WHO estimates that more than 800,000 persons die by suicide yearly. Estimated mortality is 14.5 deaths per 100,000 people that mean one person dies in every 40 seconds. 79% suicides in low- and middle-income countries. Age standardized suicide rates have declined since 1990. Suicide as global burden disease: 1.8% of total burden of disease. Suicide is second leading cause of death in 15-29 years age group. Suicide is also an indicator for sustainable development goal  ( targeted reduction in premature mortality ). Over 28% of world's suicide in India with 18% of the world's population.  Methods of suicide can vary across the world like drowning, hanging, self-immolation, poisoning etc. 28% people did not consider suicide to be associated with mental illness.
