He shared that the edge of an organization is dictated by its manufacturing to arrive at value. And quality increases the P&L of an organization in a healthy manner. He further added that the organization with the best supply chain will have the competitive edge over its competition and how Covid-19 made organizations witness surfacing of issues related to supply chain management. He defined supply chain as a process having supplier, manufacturer, product distributor, retailer and customer & this process is initiated by demand planning. It further has supply planning sending the purchase order to supplier and the cycle begins. He stated that complexity in supply chain is induced by Customer Expectations, Uncertainty and Functional Silos.

Talking about consumer expectations, Mr. Lazarus shared at length about Last Mile Delivery that is one of the key functions in online retailing. He gave examples of last mile delivery scenario of a mobile phone and food order of chicken biryani. Explaining the supply chain delivery in both cases, mobile phone had the luxury of time while the food item had to be serviced within the time slot. He further explained basic attributes that a customer expects to be present, performance attributes and delight attributes that come without expectations as a surprise and how all these factors are parts of the KANO Model. Post covid there is a change in every business and digitalization has become an integral attribute & how every business must revisit their KANO model to map customer needs and place the supply chain to meet those demands. He further talked at length about uncertainty in supply chain including demand related, supply variability, damages related, customer related & process related. Analytics creates an edge in supply chain by knowing your customer well, quantifying the uncertainty in the supply chain & supply chain model and simulation of key supply chain decisions and the impact. It also includes risk management and business performance management.
