A Panel Discussion on -Gender Equity in Sports: A way forward with new education policy

A Panel Discussion by Mr Raman Bhanot, International Sports Commentator, TV Broadcaster & Director Elan Communication; Mr Aman Saini, Indian Archer Silver Medal Compound Team, Archery Asian Games, Jakarta 2018; Ms Divya Singh, Former Captain, Indian National Women's Basketball Team, BFI Coach ( Women); Ms Prashanti Singh, Padma Shri Awardee 2019, Arjuna Awadee 2017, Indian National Women's Basketball Team and Dr Kalpana Sharma, Dean (FE) & Director, Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences was organized on the Topic-Gender Equity in Sports: A way forward with new education policy

Dr Kalpana Sharma, Dean (FE) & Director, Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences said that new national education policy 2020 will lead to an equitable & just society. It will lead to universal access to quality education. World is mapped with UN SDG4 with agenda for sustainable goal 2030, adopted by India in 2015 for equitable and inclusive education. Sports integration in cross curricular pedagogical approaches utilizing physical activities, indigenous games in pedagogical practices to help in developing skills such as collaboration, self-initiative, self-direction, self-discipline, teamwork in short sportsmanship qualities. Sports leads to exposure and enjoyment in all stages of learning.  By 2025 schools look to develop sports infrastructure, equipment, and facilities to conduct sports meet etc.

Mr Raman Bhanot, International Sports Commentator, TV Broadcaster & Director Elan Communication said that the equality and human rights commission describes equality as " ensuring that every individual has access to equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. Equity is about giving more to people who need it to make things fair.  Equality has become synonymous with leveling the playing field. So, let's make equity synonymous with more for those who need it. Students who are furthest behind may require more resources to catch up & succeed. Giving students who come to school lagging academically ( because of factors outside of a school's control) the exact same resources as students in higher income schools alone will not close the achievement gap. But making sure that low income students and female students have to access to exceptional teachers and that their schools have the funding to provide them with the kind of high-quality education & skill set they need to succeed will continue us on the path towards narrowing the gap. Issues plaguing women in sport are societal pressure, lack of opportunity, lack of Finanancial support, lack of specific facilities, Objectification, lack of media coverage, wage disparity and disparity in popularity.

Ms Divya Singh, Former Captain, Indian National Women's Basketball Team, BFI Coach ( Women) said that mind set of people should change with people thinking women as weak and soft. But women in every field proving to be the best they are near to others. As a player, I feel when boys fail from girls, they feel bad and this thinking should change. We should inspire others to play and we should never discourage anybody. As a physical education teacher, it is the duty of ours to educate the students in equal manner and encourage each one. Equality starts from home first then only can encourage others. Changing mindset at personal and professional level is important.

Mr Aman Saini, Indian Archer Silver Medal Compound Team, Archery Asian Games, Jakarta 2018 said that Initially I have seen gender equality from home first as my sister is also player. Personally, I have seen women play better archery than men. But there are less women coaches in the games. We should encourage women participants in the various games. Government bringing various schemes like Khelo India is good. But we need to change mind set and encourage women to play more games.

Ms Prashanti Singh said that change starts from home and we should create such an atmosphere to make everything easy. If things will look difficult then people will not get into it. We need to improve in number of participants that will develop the sporting culture. Like education pattern has changed, we must play sports as priority and then only we can make it change and develop. We must give different types of motivation like jobs, security etc. to women for participation.
