Future Learning Aspects of Mechanical Engineering’ (FLAME 2020)

Prof. Daniel Attinger, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, IOWA State University, USA in his keynote address talked about ‘ Can Engineering help with crime scene reconstruction’. He was sharing his views on the inaugural day of the 2nd International Conference on ‘Future Learning Aspects of Mechanical Engineering’ (FLAME 2020) organized by Amity school of Engineering & Technology, Noida. He was informed that 400 manuscripts were accepted out of the 2000 entries received that will be published post the event. Prof. Attinger talked about the various questions related to a crime scene and the necessary outcome can be found using scientific questions. He shared that an inverse problem is solved in a crime scene giving answers to the questions when & how the crime was committed and where did the blood come from. He further averred that he has been advocating for stronger scientific foundation of blood stain pattern analysis. He has worked in detail about fluid dynamics topics in bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) and also about blood as a complex fluid. He has experimented in finding out the area of origin by looking at the patterns created by the blood stains. He averred that the size of the stains, information from edge of the stains and combining these two information can lead to probalistic determination of area of origin. He stated that engineers can use physics for determining answers to various questions related to a crime scene.
