Amity Scientists Invent Smart Safety Devices against Covid-19
In a bid to strengthen safety measures and provide smart protection against novel coronavirus, scientists and researchers at Amity University have come up with unique inventions. The Scientists researched in labs to find more effective solutions to curb the spread of COVID virus and innovated New Electronic Smart Device for maintaining social distancing; Smart Gloves with Self Sensitization Systems and A Smart Electronic Device to prevent self- infection.
Social distancing is the most recommended measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus. To enable this effectively, Amity Scientists have made a handy, small, portable, low-cost, low-powered battery operated smart electronic device. This electronic device can maintain the social distance of 6 feet between two persons by giving signal through buzzer & light indications alarm. It warns both the persons, having the same device, if violating the social distancing conditions. The RF base low power electronic portable pocket friendly device in the form of a band like wrist watch will work even if a group of people are coming closer from many directions. Each unit of this invention will cost around Rs. 400-500 and the option of chargeable battery can also be easily made in these devices.
The innovative minds at Amity have also designed a novel type of gloves which not only protect the person who is using it but also prevents any spread of virus through gloves with its special design. The inner layer is same as a normal safety glove followed by second layer consisting of a special material loaded with antivirus agents/sanitizers/disinfectant. The top-most layer is perforated (having small pores) to release the antiviral agent on top surface which makes the gloves free from virus and prevent its spread. The pressure to release the sensitizer on the surface of the gloves is generated by the movement of the fingers when they hold any object. Along with providing safety, these gloves won’t allow the spread of virus on disposal as it contains sensitizer.
To prevent the most common habit of touching one’s face and nose, Amity Scientists have created an automatic alarm device. This wearable, small, portable, low-cost and low-powered battery operated electronic device will support individuals in building positive habits by raising an alarm every time a user moves their hands to touch their face. This novel electronic gadget is very affordable, light weight and can be worn around the neck like a pendant. The device can within no time detect whenever a person’s hand approaches to his face using an IR-based proximity sensor technology. The buzzer alarm, LED light and vibration motor shakes out as an alert that will become stronger as the hand gets closer to the face. The locket type electronic device has an advantage in building positive habits, which will makes the user safe from getting infection and also support in limiting the spread of COVID-19 as well as other viral or bacterial infections.
These innovations have been researched under the guidance of Dr. V.K. Jain, Distinguished Scientist & Professor, Amity Institute of Advanced Research and Studies (Materials & Devices) and his team including Dr. Suman Nagpal, Dr. Devinder Madhwal and Dr. Abhishek Verma. Dr. Jain attributed the creation of these devices to his hard-working team that worked relentlessly during the lockdown period. “We have focused upon the three basic attributes of ensuring social distancing, usage of gloves and stop people from touching their face to limit the spread of the virus. If we can curb these three basic instincts the spread of the virus can be limited,” averred Dr. Jain.
Amity Institute of Advanced Research and Studies (Materials & Devices) is the brainchild of Dr. Jain which was established more than a decade ago. The research focused institute has more than 30 projects from government funded agencies and has labs equipped with the best infrastructure. With more than 50 patents and a large number of publications, the multi-disciplinary institute has a significant number of research scholars working on various projects.
Prof. Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh lauded the efforts of Dr. Jain and his team to have come up with these three devices for the benefit of the society. “At Amity we have always focused on conducting research that is useful and benefits the society at large. These three innovations have been worked upon at a very crucial juncture and will surely go a long way in helping curb the spread of the virus,” stated Dr. Shukla.
