The Power of Self-Directed Learning
A webinar on ‘The Power of Self-Directed Learning’ was conducted by Mr. Tanmay Vora – Author; Senior Business Leader; Illustrator; Non-Executive Director-Clausion India; Non-Executive Director, Analyste India and Ex-Country Head at Basware India. The webinar focused around Self-directed learning (SDL) which has been recognized as an imperative skill for students. The main persistence of education for students must be to cultivate the skills of inquiry, and more decisively, to continue obtaining new knowledge effortlessly and skillfully for the rest of their lives. He averred that we are living in a VUCA world that’s constantly changing and the rate of change is faster than the ability to learn to cope with it. He added that real learning is an inside-out process and starts with a deep internal desire to know something and change something. He further added that an individual’s growth depends on their ability to learn in a self-directed mode. He shared with the students the story of his own life to inspire them and said that struggle is the best teacher and learning will feel uncomfortable in the beginning, but that’s ok. “I learned that in a knowledge oriented creative world, it is entirely possible to grow and thrive if I was willing to take risks, learn constantly and put that learning to good use of others,” said Mr. Vora. He stated the 3 L’s for self-directed learning including labour of love and advised students to play where their passion is as it helps to elevate their game and improve without even noticing it. The second L he talked about was lifelong learning and asked students to have an open & curious mind, create new knowledge, collaborate & network and execute & experiment to pursue constant learning. He further added that one learns best when learning happens with others and how differentiation & innovation at an intersection of more than one disciplines. The third L he referred was to Leverage that happens when you find a way to create a positive impact for yourself and others.
