The Plight of Migrant Labourers in India during Lockdown

‘The Plight of Migrant Labourers in India during Lockdown’ was highlighted in a webinar by Mr. Saurabh Chauhan, Sr. Journalist, Hindustan Times Lucknow. Mr. Chuahan talked about how in the last two months many colours of lockdown have been seen with people been locked up inside homes and people walking along on the roads to reach homes exposing the inefficiency of the system. He stated how migrants were going back to their native places as they believe that they will not die of hunger if they reach their villages. “These people sold off their belongings for meagre amounts to pay ferry drivers or truck drivers to reach their destinations. They exhausted all their earnings just to reach home,” said Mr. Chauhan. He also shared heart wrenching stories of migrant workers covered during his assignments in and around Lucknow who took hefty loans just to get back to their native places. He shared their plight on how their lives were revolving around loans and how every migrant worker had a different story to share. “Whatever we have seen of these migrant workers is just the tip of the iceberg. There is more to come. While there are workers who have returned from big cities would rush back to the cities from where they have come from, there are some who have vowed not to go back,” said Mr. Chauhan.
