There is no precedence or rulebook and we only have collective knowledge. We need to get together and come at solutions and need to plan for at least 1-2 years,” stated Ms. Narang. She shared how a number of great organizations came up after depressions, epidemics and calamities. “The crisis we are in will give rise to several unicorns. Now is the time we must make the best of the tremendous opportunity in front of us,” added Ms. Narang. She averred how business opportunity and maintaining employee morale is the priority now.

Agility to adapt to the new norms; taking these changes as challenges and make the maximum of this scenario is needed now. Also, to be agile one needs to be resilient,” shared Ms. Narang.

A webinar on ‘Role of Journalists in the Present Global Media Scenario’ was conducted by Prof. K. Suresh, Former DG, IIMC, Delhi, Dean, UPES, Dehradun. He shared how journalist are at the forefront in the battle against corona, facing great risks in their personal lives while reaching out to the poor and highlighting the plight of the caregivers and the general public and getting infected themselves. “Never before in history has there been a rise in infodemic or misinformation creating confusion amongst consumers to gauge information. An infodemic is an over-supply of information against corona that gives the position of media a lot of importance to present the facts though an institutionalized editorial process,” shared Prof. Suresh.

He shared for the print media is a double whammy as there is reduced circulation and how many RWAs are not allowing newspapers inside the society as there is a misconception that hard copies of newspapers are carriers of corona virus. “With drop in circulation comes drop in advertisement that formulates 70% of the revenue. With all sectors of the economy getting hit, issuing of advertisements has gone down drastically, causing revenue loss. Many big media houses have laid down journalists or being asked to go on leave without pay or take huge pay cuts,” shared Prof. Suresh. He also added how the loss of print media is the gain of the electronic media as people are locked in their houses and are adding to the growth in viewership. But there are very few advertisers even in the electronic media. He also averred how digital space was also undergoing the same scenario and how recommendations had been made to suspend BARC ratings for now. “Indian media has worked shoulder to shoulder in this time of crisis as a team and providing lot of Government Statistics as per the directives of the Supreme Court. However they have also been highlighting the plight of migrants, farmers, covid patients etc and been critical of government initiatives as well,” added Prof. Suresh.
