Harnessing and managing Emotions discussed during webinars at Amity University

In a webinar on ‘Harnessing Emotions’, Prof. Vimala Veera raghavan, Emeritus Professor, Psychology (IGNOU) talked at length about types of emotions in these trying times. “When we feel hurt, sad and angry, we try to escape from the situation. Emotional reaction is more common in all of us than intellectual reaction. Emotions play a very critical role in our lives, influences how we relate to others. They affect our perceptions, decision making and the actions that we take,” shared Prof. Veeraraghavan. More than 1,000 attendees were a part of the session through various social media platforms. She shared how COVID is one example which has affected our emotional health. She also talked at length about Emotional regulation and managing negativity, negative emotions and emotional regulation. “Never ignore your emotions. Learn to accept and deal with them. Emotional regulation acts as a modifier and stops you from acting impulsively,” she averred. She also shared ways on how emotional regulation can be achieved including mindful awareness; cognitive reappraisal; adaptability; self-compassion; self-soothing exercises therapy; self-care and emotional support. Talking about how to teach children to regulate their emotion, she averred that children should be taught to model the right behavior; enhance the child’s emotional vocabulary; teach children about actions and consequences; help child to detect stress but remember that some level of stress is important; reassurance is important and make them follow proper rest, sleep and nutrition. “For harnessing emotions, do what you can to take charge of your emotions/anxiety by breaking your concerns down into manageable chinks; change what you can and work on strategies for accepting and coping with what you can’t; stay connected through whatever means are available to the people that are important to you and above all remember what stress management strategies work for you and actually use them regularly to get through this challenging outbreak,” stressed Prof. Veeraraghavan. Dr. Ashok K.Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group complimented Prof. Veeraraghavan on her insightful webinar. He further shared how harnessing emotions is an integral part of life and emotional stability is the medicine for all ailments. A Lecture by Dr Rajeev Seth, Pediatrician and Chairperson, ICANCL (Indian Child Abuse, Neglect and Child Labour) Group, MD (AIIMS) was conducted on ‘Social distancing with emotional togetherness - Reformation of human behavior reducing aggression and abuse’. During his lecture he said the COVID 19 pandemic is spreading and its impact are deepening. “There is an urgent need to consider its effects on our emotional, psychological and social lives. Anxiety, loneliness, fear and grief may all become more acute than ever before. Social distancing is a non-pharmaceutical, infection prevention & control intervention and has the aim to avoid contact between those who are infected with COVID 19 and those who are not. Social distancing comes with social side effects. Humans are social and emotional beings. Need to maintain social well-being. But now we suddenly need to follow social distancing from people who are always there for us children, parents, grandparents etc. Social distancing with emotional togetherness associated with decreased cognitive functioning, increased aggression and excessive risk taking. People feel stressed and lonely. They show weaker immune responses, depression, suicidal thoughts. While live human connection is best a phone call is better than text and a video call is better than a phone call,” shared Dr. Seth. He also averred how the Pandemic has shown how interconnected we are. “One world without boundaries, inner reflection of this truth, staying connected to our values and emotional togetherness has increased. Due to lock down behavioral problem is different with every age group people like High school students are bored, irritable; College student are worried of loss of academic year; working people have financial worries and some have gone jobless and senior citizens are worried about high infection rates and death,” shared Dr. Seth who advised everyone to watch their diet, exercise, listen to music, do painting and play indoor games. A webinar on ‘Redefining and Unlocking the Future of Education Sector in Covid Times’ was conducted by Mr. Deepak Talwar, National Security Officer, Microsoft. He shared how closure of education institutions because of the lock down is hampering the learning of students and students are learning through the online mode. “We’re helping schools through the COVID-19 crisis. Microsoft is partnering with schools and universities worldwide to enable remote learning solutions. We need to empower students to become tomorrow’s innovators. We should compete for top students by engaging promising results with tailored content and streamlining enrollment, acceptance and orientation processes. We should foster student success by monitoring performance, engaging and supporting them throughout the student lifestyle to enable better outcomes. Also we should build long-term affinity and set students up for success via strong alumni network that engages beyond graduation,” shared Mr. Talwar. A webinar on ‘The Art of Outdoor Advertising’ was conducted by Mr Punit Katyayan, Creative Director - Lotus Advertising, New Delhi. Talking about the popular campaign on the product Maggi he shared how the campaign was centered around the popular tagline ‘2 minutes’ created by popular ad guru Mr. Prahlad Kakkar that still remains ingrained and etched in the minds of varying age groups. He also talked about the controversy around Maggi a few years back and how it was brought back into the market amidst increasing competition. “We use different media in outdoor advertising to promote our products. Maggi was re-established in the market using different styles of promotions and made the product get back its goodwill. So it’s important to have an interesting and impacting tagline for a product to establish itself,” shared Mr. Katyayan. He also shared how negative advertising with emotional tagline ‘Daag acche Hai’ was used to promote SurfExcel.
