Amity University Student innovates low cost Face Shield to help Health Workers from Corona

Udit Kakar, second-year BBA student of Amity University, Noida has taken it upon himself to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of low-cost face shields to help health workers in preventing from Corona. These 3D printed face shields prevent the wearer from infected person’s respiratory droplets to enter the mouth and nose passageways. Udit attributes the idea behind this face shield to his doctor parents Dr Atul Kakar who is Physician and his mother Dr Shalini Kakar, Senior specialist, Microbiologist working in Delhi Hospitals. “I wanted to thank the doctors, nurses and lab technicians and also ensure that there is sufficient protective gear for them to do their jobs. When I read that there was shortage of PPE, I decided to make these face shields. My 3D printed face shield weighs around 20 gms and has three easily assembled parts made of polylactic acid. It has holes for respiration and fits over the nose and mouth. A transparent OHP sheet is attached to the face shield to act as a protective barrier to protect healthcare workers. There is a frame that slips on to the shield from behind, holding the sheet in place and offering better grip. Each of these shield costs around Rs 140,” shared Kakar. Coming from a family of Doctors, Udit was the only one to venture into business and starting his venture of 3-D printing during his school days. “My interest in this field grew andit led me to start my own venture called “Fluidic 3D”. I provide customized 3D solution for my clients. I started my printing job of face shield during COVID-19 pandemic. I have distributed it free to many heath care workers who are combating this serious illness. Currently, I am still printing these face shields for making my small contribution toward fighting Corona infection,” shared Kakar. Pursuing regular R&D to improve his face shield, Kakar is producing 20 of them daily and is looking to patent the idea soon. "I plan to diversify my product lineup and make products available to more users," shared Kakar on his future plans.
