Role of Value Education in Contemporary Society
Amity Institute of Behavioral and Allied Sciences, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh, Noida organized an Online Guest Lecture on the topic “Role of value Education in Contemporary Society”, under the guidance of Dr. Harish Kumar (HOI, AIBAS) and Moderator Dr. Raj Lakshmi Raina on 22nd April,2020. The Resource Person for the lecture was Prof. Dr. Dhananjay Joshi, Dean and Prof. School of Education, GGSIPU, Delhi.
Prof. Joshi dealt in detail about value system needed for contemporary society and said that competition in every field has turned the man into the mechanical robot. He reminded the participants that in the mad race and cut throat competition to amass wealth, people have been forgetting about the rich cultural heritage. He stated the importance of joint family system in building a sanguine society, a society a robust value system and cultural base. He threw light on the present education system and said that it is more oriented towards examinations, employment and empowerment. He rather suggested that it should stand for emancipation, ennoblement and evolution.
Misdirected educational system can lead to commercialization, jealousy, hatred, erosion of values, greed and other negative feelings, said Prof Joshi. He reiterated the concept of values in different spheres and exhorted on practicing them with utmost diligence. He rightly said that Values cannot be taught, but have to be caught. It is at home that one gets to learn and practice values. He impressed upon the need to cherish values such as love, kindness, empathy, sympathy, mercy, and compassion and the community needs to nurture them. He stressed the importance of the values to be practiced by individuals such as Punctuality, Discipline, Obedience, Behavior, Conduct and Character.
He concluded the session by stating that values bring quality and meaning to life. Values give a person his identity and character. They make us realize what we are! The lecture was well received by the audience and was followed by an interactive question and answer session. Dr. Raj Lakshmi Raina thanked the speaker and the participative audience.
