Amity Law School Centre – II organizes National Seminar on “Honour Killing – The Socio Legal Facets”
Amity Law School Centre-II organized one day National Seminar on “Honour Killing – The Socio Legal Facets” at I-2 Moot Court on December 18, 2013. National Seminar was inaugurated by Justice A.K. Sikri, Supreme Court of India, Prof. (Dr) Paramjit S. Jaswal, Vice Chancellor – Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law Patiala, Ms. Mamta Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women, Ms. Ranjana Kumari Mishra, Director – Centre for Social Research, Prof. Laurel Oats – Seattle University School of Law, Seattle, Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Acting Vice Chancellor – Amity University, Prof. Mamta Srivastava, Addl. Director – Amity Law School Centre – II.
While addressing the gathering Justice A.K. Sikri, Judge -Supreme Court of India said that the topic which we called as killing for honour is actually killing of society’s honour and this topic requires lot of debate. Every person who is mentally stable will consider honour killing as a crime. Murder is crime and this crime is against the society. Justice Sikri said that we have to find out the reasons behind honur killing and we have to change the mentality of society.
Ms. Mamta Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women said that we have to understand the problems of rural areas. Female Feticide, crime against women, honour killing etc which are interlinked with each other and all these can end only with spreading the awareness. Ms. Sharma said that every year 1000 youths become victim of honour killing.
Ms. Ranjana Kumari Mishra, Director – Centre for Social Research said that an honour killing is nothing for honour rather it is shame for the society. Who are these persons and who had given them right to kill the youth in the name of honour killing. Ms. Mishra added that in our country only courts can pronounce the verdict and no khaap panchayat has any right to force any verdict to anyone. Central and State Governments should declare these panchayats as unconstitutional. Ms. Mishra said that when in our villages there are elected panchayats than how can these khaap panchayat can give their verdicts.
Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Acting Vice Chancellor – Amity University said that woman has dual responsibility, one inside her home and another when she walks out for work or study. Dr. Shukla remarked that on one side we worship woman as Goddess and on other hand we kill her because she done a love marriage. We have to change the dual attitude of this society.
During the occasion, students of Amity Law School Centre – II performed skit. Students, faculty members and senior officials of Amity University were present during the National Seminar.
