Language learning was once considered nothing more than a hobby, but as the world continues to become increasingly connected, learning languages has become a necessity. Advancing technologies have afforded us the ability to communicate no matter where we are in the world, amplifying the importance of studying English, French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish. The great thing about languages is that beyond communication, they also serve as a bridge between two or more cultures.
ASL is ready to cater to an ever-increasing demand for cross-cultural linguistic skills. With its four programs – BA (Hons.) English, BA (Hons.) French, MA English, and MA French – the school offers contemporary and relevant curricula designed by its Board of Studies and Industry Advisory Council to make students academically strong and industry-ready. The institution also offers doctoral programs in English, French, German and Spanish studies. Areas of specialization include a wide range of thematic, historical, and cultural studies; rhetoric and composition; linguistics; and professional writing.
Since its inception in 2007, ASL has played a major role in the internationalization of the HEI by providing teaching-learning in international languages: French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin. It promotes and implements active international collaborations through Student Exchange Programs. ASL has established two Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with prestigious institutions in France: Sciences Po Bordeaux, Bordeaux (France) and Rennes School of Business (France).
ASL focuses on engaging students in languages, cultures, literatures, linguistics, and creative writing. It cultivates students’ analytical and creative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and communication strategies that reflect an awareness of global perspectives. Ultimately, this holistic approach prepares students for their responsibilities in both civic and professional life.
ASL is actively engaged in international collaborations and proactively seeks foreign partnerships in research publications. Faculty members of the institution frequently travel abroad for international exposure and research related activities. Collaboration with Foreign Embassies to organize faculty development programs (FDPs)and conferences is a regular activity by the department. Additionally, student internships and placements in international companies, both in India and abroad, are given high priority. The institution also invites higher education cells of foreign embassies, such as Campus France of French Embassy in India, to inform and interact with students about the Study Abroad facilities abroad.
The institution boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure. A highly equipped language laboratory provides students with an immersive environment for learning foreign languages. This exposure not only fosters language acquisition through an innovative self-directed learning approach but also enhances verbal skills. ASL ensures the development of globally competent graduates as per the CEFR levels A1-C1/C2.
The institution promotes holistic growth, and strengthens soft skills, making students more employable. Additionally, all students at the university receive a Certificate of Proficiency in a foreign language upon completing their studies.
The progressive UG and PG syllabi familiarize students with contemporary trends and technical aspects of the field. The core programs foster the ability to think critically, interpret texts, and appreciate the power of language in shaping thought and representing the world. Besides, the academic programs offered by ASL open up wide career prospects in fields such as research, content writing, translation, interpretation, and academia. As English and French studies fall under the domain of social sciences and humanities, graduates can also explore opportunities in the corporate sector and governance.
The department regularly organizes national and international conferences, seminars, and symposiums to keep the field of study updated. Additionally, guest lectures and other curriculum-related activities are conducted at regular intervals.
