Laboratories

LEED Lab

LEED Lab provides students with skills and resources to become green building leaders. Resource efficiency in the building domain is the key to ensure sustainable development. In light of the environmental Challenges looming before us, it is critical to develop a pool of professionals who are equipped to design and Construct environment-friendly building. Hence, Amity University has joined hands with GBCI (Green Business Certification Institute) to Launch the first-ever LEED Lab in North India and second in India. LEED Lab is a multidisciplinary immersion course that educates and prepares students to become green building leaders with a prime focus on sustainability.

The course helps students assess the performance of existing facilities on campus and choose one building where they will facilitate the LEED for Building Operations and Maintenance (LEED O+M) rating system with the goal of certifying the facility. Students undertake the entire certification process themselves and are responsible for completing the entire documentation process and submitting the project to GBCI for review. At the end of the course, the students are prepared for ‘LEED Green Associate’ and LEED Accredited Professional’ exam. Students can walk away with a highly marketable professional credential that signifies their green building competency and knowledge.

Amity University Haryana, Gurugram is also India’s first & Asia’s second university to receive LEED Existing Building Platinum Certification, certified by Green Business Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was created by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available virtually for kinds of building and community projects, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly-efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED Certification is a globally-recognized symbol of sustainability energy and environmental design.

The course caters to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of Architecture and Planning, Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Earth Science, Environmental Science and Interior Design. It has been designed to train the next generation of sustainability advocates with the practical experience needed to compete in today’s fast-evolving job market. Through this programme, students are trained on the LEED framework through classroom activities, along with practical experience on an existing building in the AUH Campus.

“To create a more sustainable world for all, we must arm today’s students with the knowledge and skills needed to bring about the real change. These are our future leaders and they hold the power to change the world for the better,” said Mahesh Ramanjam, President and CEO, U.S. Green Building Council and Green Business Certification Inc. “The Course meets the demands of the industry by equipping students with Career-ready skills and knowledge that can be quickly deployed upon graduation. Higher education institutions, like Amity University, provide an engaging environment that gives students first-hand experience by integrating sustainable practices into daily operations and maintenance using LEED”, Prof (Dr.) Padmakali Banerjee, Pro Vice Chancellor, said while addressing the students.

Carpentry Lab

Carpentry is a skilled trade and a craft in which the primary work performed is the cutting, shaping and installation of building materials during the construction of buildings, ships, timber bridges, concrete formwork, etc. Carpenters traditionally worked with natural wood, but today many other materials are used. The main aim of the Carpenters’ Workshop is to offer a strong curated artistic direction and place the artist at the epicentre of the creative process. We lead the architecture and design to create timeless projects by involving the best-established and emerging artist and designers.

Our expertise ensures that we remain at the forefront of the full creative process with the artists to create signed projects. Carpenters Workshop Architecture operates worldwide and manages the project from the initial brainstorming to its completion.

Climatology Lab

In keeping with the vision of the department, climatic studies are an integral part of the design studios. Climatic information of the place is an important parameter applied in the design of buildings. Hence, climatology forms an important part of the curriculum of B.Arch. programme. To meet the quality of standard and conduct experiments as per the curriculum of B.Arch., Climatology Lab with modern instruments is being set up in the Department of Architecture and Planning. Basic tools and equipment have been obtained in order to facilitate the understanding of climatology in the Architectural Design Process.

This lab was set up in 2014 with the latest equipments such as hot air oven, hot plate, incubator, muffle furnace, connectivity meter, FPM compressor, photometer, analyser, etc. and also a few instruments to measure temperature, wind speed and heat flow in buildings. Environmental monitoring systems were also developed with state of the art equipment to test levels of pollution in water, air and soil samples. The lab was set up with an intention to equip the students with the skill for planning for quantifying environmental changes with respect to urban dynamics. The lab serves as one of the main subjects for M.Plan (EPM) students. It is also relevant to various studio projects at the bachelor’s level. It is in the process of further augmentation to become a full-fledged centre of research and consultation in the region.

Materials Lab

The materials lab offers students a unique opportunity to learn how to fabricate their designs and experience the production process first-hand. The materials lab is not just a model shop, it’s a place to research the feasibility of designs and develop problem-solving skills while exploring new materials.

Our extensive material collection features a range of different material types and brands including polymers, glass, ceramics, natural materials, textiles, metals and smart materials. It has become a go-to materials resource and collaboration platform for designers, engineers and manufacturers in architecture, interior design, furniture, industrial, fashion, advertising and packaging design.

Survey Lab

Surveying holds the foremost place in planning, designing and execution of any kind of construction work. Moreover, knowledge in surveying plays a vital role in the professional practice of civil engineers and architects. Hence, the students are introduced to a detailed course on surveying, provided with ample time and equipments to perform the field exercises on their own.

Surveying or land surveying is not only a technique but, also a profession. It can also be termed as the science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional positions of points, the distances and angles between them. A land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. These points are usually on the surface of the Earth, and are often used to establish maps and boundaries for land ownership, locations, such as building corners or the surface location of subsurface features, or for other purposes required by government or civil law, such as property sales.

Surveyors work with elements of geometry, trigonometry, regression analysis, physics, engineering, metrology, programming languages and law. They use the most sophisticated equipment, such as total stations, robotic total stations, theodolites, GPS receivers, retroreflectors, 3D scanners, radios, handheld tablets, digital levels, subsurface locators, drones, GIS and surveying software.

Surveying has been a vital element in the development of the human environment since the beginning of recorded history and the planning and execution of most forms of construction require it. It is also used in transport, communications, mapping and the definition of legal boundaries for land ownership. It is an important tool for research in many other scientific disciplines as well.
