 The 82nd Annual Convention and National Seminar ofIndian Society of Soil Science” wasorganized by Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS), Kolkata Chapter incollaboration with Amity University, Kolkata on 11th December,2017,(Monday) at 10:00am . More than400 soil scientists from various parts of India participated in thisconvention.

Dr Ashish Banerjee, Hon’bleAgricultural Minister, Government of West Bengal graced the occasion asthe Chief Guest, while Prof.(Dr.)Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, Vice Chancellor,Amity University, Kolkata and Dr. T. Mahapatra, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICARwere the Special Guest of Honour. Dr. Suresh K. Chaudhari, ADG (SWM ICAR) &President ISSS presided over the programme.

Our HonorableMinister-in-charge, Agriculture, Government of West Bengal in his inaugural address narrated the majoragricultural strategies of the state while Dr. T. Mohapatra inspired all thesoil scientists of the country to emphasize on the fertility aspects of soilscience. He was very emphatic about soil carbon content.

Prof. (Dr.) D. Chattopadhyay,Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Kolkata mentioned that introducingagriculture as a course in the curriculum structure of Amity University in nearfuture, as a vision of our Founder President, Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan.

Dr. S.K. Chaudhary, Presidentof ISSS, expressed deep satisfaction for this collaborative event with privateuniversity outside the arena of NAAS and appreciated the views by the Hon’bleDG of ICAR.

During the convention, twospecial/invited lectures will be organized viz., 35th Prof. J.N. Mukherjee ISSSFoundation Lecture and 44th Dr. R.V. Tamhane Memorial Lecture. In addition, ahalf-day special symposium on “Soil and Water Management Innovations towardsDoubling the Farmers Income” will be organized. Along with this, a NationalSeminar on “Development in Soil Science-2017” will also be organised .

The Kolkata chapter of ISSSfelicitated Prof. L. N. Mandal, now at 91, renowned soil scientist of thecountry and former VC of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya.

The inaugural session released five important publications.
