India is known to be one of the most disaster prone countries in the world. A whole range of geophysical as well as hydro-meteorological hazards impact millions across the country at regular intervals leaving behind a trail of heavy loss of lives, property and livelihood. Our disaster losses tend to outweigh the development gains. The economic and social costs on account of losses caused by natural disasters continue to mount year after year as disasters occur with unfailing regularity encompassing every segment of national life.

Management of disasters requires a multidisciplinary approach and building requisite skills and capabilities adequate enough to effectively deal with the whole cycle of disaster management – prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, relief and rehabilitation. There is an urgent need to raise general awareness levels of the people as also organise meaningful training for professionals who can play a pro-active role in disaster management.

Establishment of Institute

W ith the above aim in view, Amity has added yet another discipline to its long list of subjects being taught within the Amity Universe. The Amity Institute of Disaster Management conducts Certificate courses of three months duration on Disaster Management for officers of the Defence Forces and other professionals. The Institute is located in the Amity University Campus,
