Civil engineering is undergoing rapid changes driven by globalization, growing environmental, safety and security concerns, population demands and by scientific advances in fields such as biotechnology, materials science, nanotechnology, and many more. Obviously, such changes demand civil engineers acquire more knowledge than in the past.
In this context, the Department of Civil Engineering at Amity School of Engineering & Technology is organizing International Conference on Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE). The aim of TRACE 2022 is to bring together the international leading academicians, researchers and engineers, both theoreticians and experimentalists, and to present their original research work of very high quality in different areas of civil engineering. Both oral and poster presentations are included in the conference program.
The third edition of International Conference on Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE 2020) was hosted by Department of Civil Engineering, Amity University Uttar Pradesh Noida India on 20th-21st August, 2020 in association with Academic Partner Liverpool John Moores University, UK, Rowan University, USA and Tribhuvan University, Nepal. The Technical Sponsor was Springer and the main knowledge partner of the conference was Institution of Civil Engineers, India; Women in Science & Engineering (WISE) India; Indian Geo-technical Society (IGS) and Bentley systems. The industry partner was Defence Infrastructure Planning and Management (DIPM) Council of India and J K Cement Ltd. The Chief Guest during in-augural session was Maj. Gen. Manoj Kumar Bindal, Executive Director, National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and during Valedictory function Major General Sanjeev Jain, Command Chief Engineer, Army’s Corps of Engineers, Western Command, Chandimandir. The conference focused on the recent advances in civil engineering, the rapid evolution in areas encompassing construction & building design, infrastructure planning, structural engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering and related fields.
The deliberation on conference theme was done through 3 plenary sessions centred on trends and recent advances in construction industry, infrastructure sector, and software application in civil engineering. One of the session was conducted on the topic Construction 4.0 - Unlocking construction's digital future by ICE, India and the panel members were Mr. Rajesh Patwardhan, Director Business development, Water India and Growth Accelerator, Black & Veatch (Moderator); Mr. Sundar Chandramoulli, Vice President Special Projects, Bangalore International Airport Ltd ; Mr. Shailesh Thatte, General Manager, Engineering Management, Hindustan Construction Company; Mr. Uma Shankar Virat, Chief Project Manager, MMRC; Dr. Achal Kumar Mittal, Head Structural Engineering CSIR- CBRI, Roorkee ; Mr. Srinivas Mantrala, Vice President, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. and Mr. Somnath Nandan, VP & Head Engg SBG Urban Infra, Tata Projects. The panel member discussed that the essential goal of Construction 4.0 is to digitize the construction industry processes to accomplish an adaptive yet extensive production and service network which will be faster, more efficient and more customer-centric, while at the same time going beyond automation and optimization and detect new business opportunities and models for civil engineering graduates. An exclusive plenary session was conducted on the topic Women in Engineering: Breaking the Barriers and Crafting a Successful Career. The session chair of this session was hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Balvinder Shukla, , Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Sr. Vice President, RBEF and the guest speakers were Dr. Lakshmy Parameswaran, Chief Scientist, Bridge Engineering & Structures Division, CSIR-Central Road Research Institute; Ms. Sangeeta Wij, Managing Partner, SD ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS LLP ; Ms. Vidya Basarkod, Director Ramboll Engineering Centre ( Global Engg Operations) & Country Manager Aviation at Ramboll; Ms. Anusha Shah, Director, Resilient Cities, Arcadis & Visiting Professor, King's College, UK; Ms. Krystyna Araszkiewicz, Project Manager, Sweco Consulting sp. z o.o., Poland ; Ms. Shalini Verma, General Manager (Engineering), Engineers India Limited. and Ms. Sindhu Nair, Chief Engineering Manager (Civil), Larsen & Toubro. They deliberated on how women are getting into the construction field and expanding themselves and pushing beyond barriers. Bringing in women's ideas helps industries by bringing in more diversity of thought. The more diverse the talent pool, the more diverse the problem-solving process is.
One of the most important session was conducted on the topic NEP 2020: Role of Industry-Academia Handshaking, and the invited speakers were Mr. Bikram K Nayak, Head - Human Resources, L&T-NxT ; Ms. Rashmi Mansharamani, Chief Human Resources Office, Wave Group ; Dr. Manoj Tiwari, Regional officer & Asst.Director, Northern Regional office, AICTE-Kanpur ; Dr. Altaf Usmani, Assistant General Manager (Technical) & Head Design, Underground Storages for Hydrocarbon, Engineers India Limited; Mr. Satish Sehta, Vice President-International Business Development; Mr. Rajarshi Sengupta, Deputy General Manager & Head - Methods & Planning - North India, Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Limited; Ms. Barnali Sarkar, Independent Consultant, Ex-Vice President(SCM), Stanza Living; Ms. Sonia Paul, Head Training & Development, GMR Group. The invited panel members discussed on the New Education Policy, and they summarised that it is a bold move to resolve the binary of research and teaching and the focus on research will foster a strong culture for innovation. This, along with the enhancement of digital infrastructure, will match our education system with the requirements of today’s dynamic business and economic environment. The policy has a sharp global outlook with an emphasis on 360-degree learning, advancing life skills and focusing on talent generation. This will give students more exposure to the best global practices in education and enrich their learning experience.
In TRACE 2020, the paper presenters and delegates were from across India and other countries such as UK, USA, Nepal and Malaysia. Out of 300 papers, the conference proceedings consisting of 105 selected papers was published. Select proceedings of TRACE 2020 were published as 3 book volumes by Springer as a part of the Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering book series. The select proceedings of TRACE 2020 are Advance in Geotechnics and Structural Engineering, Advances in Energy and Environment and Advances in Water Resources and Transportation Engineering.
During the valedictory function of the conference, Honorary Professorship was awarded to Prof. Rafid Alkhaddar, Liverpool John Moores University, UK; Prof. Krishna R. Reddy, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA; Prof. Kauser Jahan, Rowan University, New Jersey, U.S.A.; Dr Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia.
The second edition of International conference on Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE 2018) was hosted by Department of Civil Engineering, ASET on 23rd-24th August, 2018 in association with Academic Partner “Liverpool John Moores University, UK” and the “National University of Malaysia. The Technical Sponsors was “Springer” and “Capital Publishing”. The main knowledge partner of the conference was Institution of Civil Engineers, UK. Indian Association of Structural Engineers ( IAStuctE) ; Women in Science & Engineering ( WISE) India; Indian Geo-technical Society (IGS) and Indian Building Congress(IBC). The Industry partner was Defence Infrastructure Planning and Management (DIPM) Council of India. The main knowledge partner of the conference was Institution of Civil Engineers, UK.Defence Infrastructure Planning and Management (DIPM) Council of India was the Industry Partner. Several national level civil engineering societies namely Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), Delhi Chapter; Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE), and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE India) supported the conference as knowledge partner. The conference focused on the tremendous advances in civil engineering, the rapid evolution in areas encompassing construction & building design, infrastructure planning, structural engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering and related fields. The conference witnessed participation from eminent academicians, renowned industry experts, researchers from R&D centers, faculty and students from India and abroad. “Call for papers” extended invite for original research papers in the areas of development of novel cementitious materials and variants of concrete, sustainability challenges associated with the development of smart cities, innovations in structural engineering including seismic retrofitting of buildings, computer aided design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure using building information modelling (BIM) approach, strategies and policy development for reduction, management and recycling of waste with reference to civil engineering industry, transportation and urban traffic management, advances in hydraulics & water resources engineering, environmental engineering, big data and information technology in civil engineering and geotechnical engineering.
The deliberation on conference theme was done through 3 plenary sessions centered on trends and recent advances in construction industry, infrastructure sector, and software application in civil engineering. An exclusive plenary session by WISE India was conducted on role and participation of women engineers in different development taking place in construction industry. A session was dedicated to Alumni of the college who are now holding good positions in industry. The alumni discussed the market opportunities, industry expectations and perspective for fresh civil engineering graduates. Guest speakers were mostly industry leaders from government organisation, established academicians from international and national premier institutes, and researchers from established research labs. Around 50 papers were presented across eight different tracks covering environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction technology, construction material and structural engineering, hydraulics & water resources engineering, transportation engineering and inter-disciplinary work in civil engineering. The presenters were from across India and three other countries of Taiwan, Nepal and USA. A conference proceeding consisting of 91 selected papers was published. Selected papers were sent for further review byscopus-indexed journals, Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering (Springer -ISSN: 2095-2430 (print version)), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Construction Materials (ISSN 1747-650X | E-ISSN 1747-6518), Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science (ISSN 1496-2551 | E-ISSN 1496-256X), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Geotechnical Engineering (ISSN 1353-2618 | E-ISSN 1751-8563), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Transport (ISSN 0965-092X | E-ISSN 1751-7710).
During the valedictory function of the conference, Special Achievement award was presented to a woman engineer and our alumni, Ms. Pravesh Mishra, who was topper of batch 2011-15 and currently posted in Indian Navy. Also, 10 industries namely J K Cement, L&T, Shapoorji & Pallonji Group, GMR Infrastructure, Tandon Consultants, STUP Consultants, Ahluwalia Contracts, Bestech Pvt. Ltd. And Ashiana Housingwere felicitated with industry leadership award.
