Civil engineering is undergoing rapid changes driven by globalization, growing environmental, safety and security concerns, population demands and by scientific advances in fields such as biotechnology, materials science, nanotechnology, and many more. Obviously, such changes demand civil engineers acquire more knowledge than in the past. In this context, the Department of Civil Engineering at Amity School of Engineering & Technology is organizing International Conference on “Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering”. The aim of TRACE-2018 is to bring together the international leading academicians, researchers and engineers, both theoreticians and experimentalists, and to present their original research work of very high quality in different areas of civil engineering. Both oral and poster presentations are included in the conference program.
The first edition of International conference on Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE 2016) was hosted by Department of Civil Engineering, ASET on 12th-13th August, 2016 in association with Chiba Institute of Technology, Japan and Chaoyang University of Technology, Taiwan. The main knowledge partner of the conference was Institution of Civil Engineers, UK.Defence Infrastructure Planning and Management (DIPM) Council of India was the Industry Partner. Several national level civil engineering societies namely Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), Delhi Chapter; Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE), and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE India) supported the conference as knowledge partner. The main sponsors for the event were J K Cement, Zamil Steels, L&T ECC, Bentley. The guest of honors included Prof. Sung-Chi Hsu, Professor and Dean of R&D, Chaoyang University of Technology, Taichung, Taiwan, Mr. Philipp Matter, Head, Transport & Infrastructure, iCRC Middle East, WSP, Parsons Brinckerhoff Engineering Services, Prof. Mahesh Tandon, MD, Tandon Consultants Pvt. Ltd. & President, IAStruct, Dr. S.P.S. Bakshi, Chairman & Managing Director, Engineers Project India Ltd. (EPIL), Mr. Arvind Arora- Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE), Former Director General, Military Engineering Services (MES), Ministry of Defence, AHQ, E-in-C’s Branch, New Delhi, Dr. B. Bhattacharjee, Professor, IIT Delhi. Mr. Mahendra Raj, MD, Mahendra Raj Consultant Pvt. Ltd. was honored with the Life Time Achievement Award during the inaugural function of the conference.
The conference focused on the tremendous advances in civil engineering, the rapid evolution in areas encompassing construction & building design, infrastructure planning, structural engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering and related fields. The conference witnessed participation from eminent academicians, renowned industry experts, researchers from R&D centers, faculty and students from India and abroad. “Call for papers” extended invite for original research papers in the areas of development of novel cementitious materials and variants of concrete, sustainability challenges associated with the development of smart cities, innovations in structural engineering including seismic retrofitting of buildings, computer aided design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure using building information modelling (BIM) approach, strategies and policy development for reduction, management and recycling of waste with reference to civil engineering industry, transportation and urban traffic management, advances in hydraulics & water resources engineering, environmental engineering, big data and information technology in civil engineering and geotechnical engineering.
The deliberation on conference theme was done through 3 plenary sessions centered on trends and recent advances in construction industry, infrastructure sector, and software application in civil engineering. An exclusive plenary session by WISE India was conducted on role and participation of women engineers in different development taking place in construction industry. A session was dedicated to Alumni of the college who are now holding good positions in industry. The alumni discussed the market opportunities, industry expectations and perspective for fresh civil engineering graduates. Guest speakers were mostly industry leaders from government organisation, established academicians from international and national premier institutes, and researchers from established research labs. Around 50 papers were presented across eight different tracks covering environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction technology, construction material and structural engineering, hydraulics & water resources engineering, transportation engineering and inter-disciplinary work in civil engineering. The presenters were from across India and three other countries of Taiwan, Nepal and USA. A conference proceeding consisting of 91 selected papers was published. Selected papers were sent for further review byscopus-indexed journals, Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering (Springer -ISSN: 2095-2430 (print version)), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Construction Materials (ISSN 1747-650X | E-ISSN 1747-6518), Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science (ISSN 1496-2551 | E-ISSN 1496-256X), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Geotechnical Engineering (ISSN 1353-2618 | E-ISSN 1751-8563), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Transport (ISSN 0965-092X | E-ISSN 1751-7710).
During the valedictory function of the conference, Special Achievement award was presented to a woman engineer and our alumni, Ms. Pravesh Mishra, who was topper of batch 2011-15 and currently posted in Indian Navy. Also, 10 industries namely J K Cement, L&T, Shapoorji & Pallonji Group, GMR Infrastructure, Tandon Consultants, STUP Consultants, Ahluwalia Contracts, Bestech Pvt. Ltd. And Ashiana Housingwere felicitated with industry leadership award.
