Several factors affects the efficiency of a solar plant: among them, the electrical working conditions of the panels, the local weather, and the tidiness of the panel. Besides, the economic cost of operations to maintain and manage the plant have to be considered in its adoption. This talk investigated the use of computational intelligence paradigms to model the behavior of a solar panel in terms of energy production forecast, Maximum Power Point (MPP) prediction and the degradation of production due to the presence of dust on the panel have been modeled, Several prediction computational intelligence techniques have been challenged in these tasks to exploit measurements directly collectible from the panel and from public weather station.

Modern control algorithms in the emerging power systems process information delivered mainly by distributed, synchronized measurement systems, and available in data streams with different reporting rates. Multiple measurement approaches are used: on one side, the existing time-aggregation of measurements are offered by currently deployed IEDs (SCADA framework), including smart meters and other emerging units; on the other side, the high-resolution waveform-based monitoring devices like phasor measurement units (PMUs) use high reporting rates (50 frames per second or higher) and can include fault-recorder functionality.
There are several applications where synchronized data received with high reporting rate has to be used together with aggregated data from measurement equipment having a lower reporting rate (complying with power quality data aggregation standards) and the accompanying question is how adequate are the energy transfer models in such cases. For example, state estimators need both types of measurements: the so-called “classical” one, adapted for a de facto steady-state paradigm of relevant quantities and the “modern” one, i.e. with fewer embedded assumptions on the variability of same quantities. Another example is given by emerging active distribution grids operation, which assumes higher variability of the energy transfer and consequently a new model approximation for its characteristic quantities (voltages, currents) is needed. Such a model is required not only in order to be able to correctly design future measurement systems but also for better assessing the quality of existing “classical” measurements, still in use for power quality improvement, voltage control, frequency control, network parameters’ estimation etc.
The main constraint so far is put by the existing standards where several aggregation algorithms are recommended, with specific focus on the information compression. The further processing of rms values (already the output of a filtering algorithm) results in significant signal distortion.
Presently there is a gap between (i) the level of approximation used for modeling the current and voltage waveforms which is implicitly assumed by most of the measurement devices deployed in power systems and (ii) the capabilities and functionalities exhibited by the high fidelity, high accuracy and high number of potential reporting rates of the newly deployed synchronized measurement units.

The presentation provides an overview of these techniques, with examples from worldwide measurement solutions for smart grids deployment.

Energy is very important in our daily life. Without energy we cannot sustain our lives. According to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA’s), the world energy consumption will grow by 56% between 2010 and 2040, from 524 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) to 820 quadrillion Btu. The emission of CO2 will go up to 46% and the usage of liquid fuels in transportation will go up to 38%. Transportation sector consumes about 25% of total energy production. It produces around 18% of greenhouse gases. Ground transportation is the biggest producer of the greenhouse gases in the transportation sector. In order to conserve the energy and keep the environment clean, proper steps need to be taken to overcome these problems.
According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, It is estimated that over 1 billion passenger cars travel the streets and roads of the world today. The 1 billion-unit mark was reached in 2010 for the first time ever. The current vehicle efficiency which uses the internal combustion engine as its power train is about 35 to 45%. Only 1/3 of the energy is converted to useful work, another 2/3 is wasted as heat. Furthermore, the fatalities rate due to road accidents is increasing every year. According to WHO, worldwide it was estimated in 2004 that 1.2 million people were killed (2.2% of all deaths) and 50 million more were injured in motor vehicle collisions. Automotive industry has been working very hard to rectify these problems by introducing more energy efficient and intelligent vehicles which have more passive and active safety features such as airbags, seatbelts, child constraints, electronic stability control and antilock braking systems. More light weight vehicles with strong structural integrity will also be considered for future vehicles production. It will make the vehicle safer for the users to use and help safe more energy and less air pollution. With the recent advancement in IoT, big data, embedded system, sensor technology, light weight material, smart cognitive radio networks, vehicle-to-vehicle communication system, higher efficiency and ultra-low emission internal combustion engines, intelligent converter, high performance battery and fuel cell technologies, the production of autonomous, smarter, safer, energy efficient and zero emission vehicles is possible in near future for smart cities application. Apart from vehicle technologies, other factors such as road users’, well maintained road infrastructure, well maintained vehicles, drivers’ attitudes and law and enforcement are also important to be considered and they should work together in order to make our world natural resources can be preserved and maintain cleaner environment and produce sustainable mobility. Future trends for sustainable mobility where research and business opportunities will also be highlighted and discussed. The impacts of IoT and big data and other emerging technologies mentioned above to the automotive industry especially intelligent energy efficient vehicle for smart cities application will be presented.

This presentation will address the breakthrough developments in the design and implementation of tactical missiles flight control systems. The guidance, navigation, and control challenges have made interception of maneuvering targets very difficult. Flight control systems of modern tactical missiles need to be designed to allow interceptors to successfully hit-to-kill highly maneuvering targets. The presentation will include modern methods and approaches for the most critical aspects of maneuvering targets interception i.e. missile flight control system design, interception strategies, and target tracking and maneuvering prediction.

In the past few years, renewable energies have experienced one of the largest growths in percentage. One of the major reason for the tremendous growth is the development of efficient and reliable power electronic converters. The development of multilevel converters has provided a better solution for the power quality in the renewable energy and industrial drives applications. This is due to the fact that the multilevel inverter can achieve high power using mature medium-power semiconductor technology.
In the proposed talk, first the developments of power electronic converter over the last few years will be discussed. The application of power electronic converter in controlling the special electrical machine (such as brushless dc motor) will be discussed with reference to the vehicular application. History and development of the multi-level inverter will be discussed and its application in the renewable energy will be discussed in detail.

Today 80% of the produced electrical energy is coming from steam turbines driven by coal or uranium. Beside the limited availability of these sources also the environmental impact is very high and often very onerous. Therefore around the globe the production of electrical energy coming from renewable sources like wind and sun is an emerging process. But these new sources up to now not only have to substitute the conventional fossil and nuclear one completely, they also have to guarantee the stable and reliable supply of the consumers. Black Outs have to be avoided in the highly industrialised societies by all means if possible. Therefore in this presentation a possible path for the transition from the energy production system of the past to a reliable production system of the future will be shown.
