ABOUT THE CONGRESS

Asia-Pacific is the largest human inhabited region and amongst the most productive areas of the world. Geographically diverse, the region teems with unparalleled biodiversity especially in its vast tropical and sub-tropical region; thereby not surprisingly, viral diversity of the region is also rich and underexplored. Frequently, viral epidemics have devastated local populations in terms of health and crop loss. Globalization has meant that such threat quickly spread across the world becoming global epidemics or pandemics evidenced from the influenza epidemics over the last two decades.

Viral threats to human notwithstanding, animal and plant viral diseases originating in this region such as White Spot disease of shrimps, koi herpes virus of carps, white muscle disease of prawns etc. in aquatic animals; influenza, dengue, rabies, hepatitis, rotavirus etc. in human; foot and mouth disease, rota virus, rabies, bovine viral diarrhea virus, bird flu etc. in animals and avians; and begomoviruses, tospoviruses, ilarviruses, potyviruses, cucumoviruses etc. in plants; have rapidly wreaked havoc in other parts of the world as well. The Asia-Pacific Congress of Virology (APCV) therefore, brings to focus viruses of the region that can emerge as global threats. Held under the aegis of the Indian Virological Society, and hosted by Amity University, Noida, India, APCV is the first Congress of such nature that will bring together scientists, planners, researchers and students from across the world with an interest in the Asia-Pacific region. The deliberations and discussions during the congress are aimed at getting update on the viral problems of Asia Pacific and developing new contacts amongst researchers and exploring the possibility of collaborative partnerships. This will help mitigating the threats posed by the viral diseases of this region that threaten human, plants and animals. Discussion on strengthening academia-industry interface is an added attraction.

ABOUT INDIAN VIROLOGICAL SOCIETY

Indian Virological Society (IVS) came into existence in December 1984. The objective of the Society is to promote research and development in the field of virology. It provides platform to discuss epidemiology and management of viruses affecting animals, human and plants. IVS organizes National and International onferences/Training/Seminar/Academia-Industry meet etc. The society publishes Indian Journal of Virology twice a year and also encourages publication of book, compendium, manual, bulletin etc. on any aspect of virology. IVS is a member of International Union of Microbiological Society (IUMS).

The IVS recognizes outstanding contributions of individuals in the field of virology and confers ‘Prof. K.S. Bhargava Oration Award’ and ‘Fellow of IVS’ in the annual convention. In addition 'Young Scientist Award' is given each year to a scientist not more than 35 years of age through specially organized session of oral/poster presentations. Hitherto, the IVS has organized twenty three National Symposia/ Conferences/International Training Programs on important current topics in different parts of the country and abroad.

AMITY INSTITUTE OF VIROLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY

Amity Institute of Virology and Immunology (AIVI) is dedicated to the study of biology of human, animal, plant and aquatic viruses, the pathogenesis of viral diseases, the immune response of the organism and related problems. AIVI has a highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty, committed to the cause of teaching and extensive training in all the related advanced techniques. The faculty of AIVI is also committed to conduct research in basic and applied virology and immunology for the purpose of understanding the mechanisms of the disease initiation and progression as well as the mechanisms involved in the control of disease processes.

AIVI runs M.Sc. Virology, M.Sc. Immunology, Ph.D. Virology and Ph.D. Immunology programmes. To give students more exposure to the latest developments in the field of virology & immunology, AIVI has entered into collaboration with the leading laboratories and R & D centers of the corporate sector.
