When we speak about students well-being, very often, spiritual, social emotional aspect of child are ignored. Very often cognitive aspect of students personality are over-emphasised at the cost of emotional, social, spiritual development of a child. The result is depression, suicides, addictions and unhappy lives.
We shall discuss various aspects of students well being and character, causes and how they could be developed.
A child's personality is made up of three domains:
cognitive, affective & psychomotor domains.
Cognitive domain develops through reading, writing, thinking, critical thinking, analysing, evaluating, judging, and problem solving. All these ensure the full development of students' brains and their cognitive ability.
Second, a very important aspect of students personality is their emotional and social development and the development of their value system, which shapes his/her character.
Clarity of values and emotional development helps the student to make clear and good decisions. It also results in increasing his happiness quotient, social quotient leading to his/her emotional development.
Emotional development shapes social and professional relations. Clarity in value system leads to spiritual satisfaction and development.
Third aspect of personality development is psychomotor development. This basically focuses on kinesthetic skills, i.e., expertise of the body in doing specific actions or moments.
There are various things that impact above three domains of personality. They are habits.
Values and habits form character and character is the foundation of all success in life.
Clarity of values and their priorities in students lives make decision making easy for them.
Mahatma Gandhi, Steve Jobs, Gautam Buddha, Thomas Alva Edison, and Chhatrapati Shivaji had clear vision and values in their lives. So they could make history.
School & college education make this choice of values easy for students. It helps clarify priorities, and prioritising skills makes them effective in their lives and professions.
Educational institutions help students to understand and choose right values. They should inculcate the importance of trustworthiness and integrity in the students through activities and various platforms.
Healthy and pro-human values lead to healthy habits and healthy habits with a strong foundation of values build strong character.
Games, co-curricular activities, field visits expose children to various situations & realities and challenges that impact their character.
Safety, security awareness of possible risks as a teenager, awareness of strengths and avenues to develop them. Training to keep physical fitness, emotional management and understanding leads to a good self image and interpersonal relationships and distance from any addictions.
Identification of any learning disabilities, bullying, or physical or mental harassment of a child in time can protect the child from possible depression.
If a child suddenly becomes withdrawn or aggressive, fearful, if there is a sudden change in the academics of a child, teachers and parents need to pay immediate attention and find out the cause and counsel the child.
In case of learning disorders, special educators should be referred or special pedagogies should be devised to ensure the development of a child.
Students engaged in reading, physical activities, outdoor games, arts, music, performing arts, dance, creative works & projects display better physical & mental health.
It is observed that students who have chosen perfect goals and are meaningfully engaged in the pursuit of their goals remain happy. But excessive pressure and forced career goals lead to frustration.
Schools & parents should help children to make informed decisions and motivate them without pressurising to grow as individuals.
Value education helps students to prioritize the values and goals in their lives. Schools, colleges and universities play a vital role in this. Parents obviously have a lion's share in developing healthy habits and values in their children.
In a nutshell, values and thoughts develop habits, habits develop character and healthy character with an ethical approach to the achievement of goals leads to success and a happy life, fruitfully contributing to the world.
