“Amity Human Values Quarter” starts at Amity University

In order to instill humanistic values amongst its students, Amity University is observing “Amity Human Values Quarter” from January 28- April 29, 2009. “Amity Human Values Quarter” is a cherished activity in the University giving students and entire Amity fraternity an opportunity to introspect and rededicate them to the cause of the society.

Inaugurating the “Amity Human Values Quarter”, Dr. A K Sharma- Former Chairman, NCERT said that everyday the spirit of human values need to be exercised. Human Values have to be made a way of everybody’s life. The right age to instill human values in a person is when he/she is young and thus impressionable. He opined that education is a powerful tool for ingraining human values in a person but for that teachers have to play a dual role that of a disseminator of education and of a perpetuator of values, which is a big challenge for teachers. He implored that the content of values needs to be drawn from our national goals, which are enshrined in the constitution of our country. Dr. Sharma commended the vast array of activities which will go over for next three months under “Amity Human Values Quarter” in Amity University.

Elaborating the role of teachers in nurturing human values in children, Mr. K N Singh- IPS Officer (Retd. ) said that a teacher plays a major role in shaping a student’s personality. The responsibility of instilling values in children lies with teachers, so they should make sure that no student is left untouched by the importance of values and culture at large. He complimented Amity for starting human values quarter and devoting three months to imbue and nurture human values in students.

Stressing the importance of human values, Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Universe said that education, qualification and knowledge all put together cannot lead a man to success, if he lacks human values. Human values are the base of all other attributes which leads to success. Promising that human values quarter would be a continuous effort, Dr. Chauhan expressed that if in a year, three months are devoted to instilling human values then the purpose of providing education to students is complete.

Several senior Directors and officials of Amity including Maj. Gen. K J Singh- Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Dr. B. Shukla- Pro VC (A), Amity University, Prof. (Dr.) Gurinder Singh- Pro- VC (I), Amity University, Dr. Sunil Saran- Vice Chairman, Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) and Gen. B K Bopanna- Director, Amity Indian Military College presented their views on the importance and need of human values in today’s world.

During the inauguration, students from several institutions such as Paras Sachdeva from Amity Institute of Telecom Technology, Rohan Raj Mishra from Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Apoorva Tandon from Amity Business School, Anand Mohan Singh from Amity School of Insurance and Actuarial Sciences presented their views on topics like “Human Goodness Prevails”, “Violence against nature”, “Ethical management for success” ,“Inculcating a broad secular outlook” respectively.

During this quarter, several competitions such as debates, short skits, quiz, screening of short films, essay competition, poster competition would take place in which students from Amity University would display their skil1s. This human values quarter will culminate on April 29, 2009 co-inciding with the birthday of Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan-Chairperson, Amity International Schools who is the embodiment of human values and has contributed immensely in inculcating human values in the students of Amity.
