Skill Development of Women with Intellectual Disabilities: Issues and Challenges

 

Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences, Amity University, Noida in collaboration with National Commission for Women, New Delhi organized Two days National Seminar on “Skill Development of Women with Intellectual Disabilities: Issues and Challenges” on 9th-10th January, 2020 with CRE status accredited by the Rehabilitation Council of India.

Prof. (Dr.) Jayanti Pujari, Dean and Director, AIRS giving an over view of the National Seminar said, ‘Empowering women and girls with disabilities is the need of the hour. They need to be trained in appropriate business, vocational and marketing skills to succeed as women entrepreneurs. The purpose of the Seminar is to create a forum for scholars and practitioners to share knowledge and expertise towards promotion of gender equality, empowerment of women and girls with Intellectual and Developmental Disability and entrepreneurial skill development leading to Empowerment and Independence.’

The Chief Guest of the National Seminar, Shri. Kishor B Surwade, Deputy Director General, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India set the tone of the seminar by sharing census details on Persons with Disabilities, highlighting the statistics on Women with Intellectual Disabilities.  He emphasised on various policies introduced by Government of India to enhance lives of Women with Disabilities.

The Guest of Honour and Key Note Speaker, Padma Shri (Dr.) Uma Tuli, Founder of Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust, New Delhi highlighted the importance and contribution of women in society. She threw light on the ground realities of Women with Disabilities and Marginalization of Women with Intellectual Disabilities. 

Blessing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Balvindar Shukla, Vice-Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida briefed about the work undertaken by Amity University for the upliftment of People with Disabilities. Dr. Shukla emphasised possible pathway towards skill development of People with Disabilities as per industry needs which can help them to be gainfully employed and contribute to India’s growing economy.

The Seminar witnessed a participation of 200 delegates including academicians, practitioners and students in the field of Rehabilitation from across the country. During the two-day National Seminar saw the contribution of eminent resource persons from the field of Special Education and Disability. The sessions witnessed deliberations on Skill Development of Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Indian Scenario, Creating Employment Opportunities for Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Accessibility issues in Training and Employment of Women with Intellectual Disability, Inclusive Design for Skill Development, Transition from School to Adulthood: The Promise of Adulthood, Success Story of Inclusive Employment; Life Skills of Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Empowerment of Women with Special Olympics.

Ms. Ira Singhal (IAS) Director Community Services, MCD (North) and Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President, ASTIF, AUUP graced the Valedictory function with their presence.  Ms. Ira Singhal highlighted the importance of skill development for holistic progress and survival of women with Intellectual Disabilities. She emphasized the need for financial independence for women with disabilities. Dr. W. Selvamurthy assured assistance from Amity University in the field of Rehabilitation.  He shared his resolution of making the world a happy and a better place for all including Women with Disabilities.
