A webinar on ‘Gender Issues’ was organized by Amity Institute of Social Sciences, Amity University that looked at different aspects of the topic. The session was graced by Mr. Amit K Ghosh (IAS) Joint Secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways who spoke on intersection of the domains of governance and gender equality with focus on the challenges being faced by young administrators. The second speaker, Ms. Manisha Saxena (IAS), Secretary and Commissioner (Transport & ACL) GNCTD spoke on women empowerment with special mention of the economic aspect and the legal aspect.
Mr. Amit K Ghosh shared his views on the on-going Mission Shakti, an initiative by the UP Government and to further communicate about the unfortunate incidents related to women in the country. He stated the intersection of the domains of governance including Legislation, Judiciary and the Executive that works by coming together. Sharing his views on the constitutional framework, he averred that the principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. Advising young administrators about what they should do, he referred to Gandhiji’s Talisman while contemplating further action. He also shared the Principles of Governance with one of the main aims of governance is to establish equality by facilitating those who aren’t treated socially equal. He averred that safety & security of women is predominant in the minds of their families with a steady rise in the number of crimes against them. He stated that it is the responsibility of the young generation to fulfil this duty and raise their voice to create a movement.
Ms. Manisha Saxena shared that as far as literacy is concerned, women have been able to win that battle as seen in the rise of the school goers. However, in case of any mishap, it’s the girlchild is the one to suffer. She further stated that there have been active steps taken to improve the quality of education in government schools by the Delhi Government. She averred that the patriarchal nature of the society has been responsible for the behaviour and nature of girls. Lack of means, preference for the male child to do better etc lead to health issues cropping in women & girlchild. Also, there are few parents who are forthcoming in allowing their girls to take up professional courses. She called for allowing women the time to learn some new craft that could be monetised as well. She stressed on encouraging skill development for women who are not earning much to give them more confidence. She also shared examples of roof-top farming, vertical farming that could be taught to women to take up economic opportunities and reduce gender inequality. She called for not allowing women to give up their economic independence.
