Educational Tour to Lucknow

An educational trip to Lucknow was organized by Amity School of Architecture and Planning, Haryana as a part of their curriculum for the students to explore the prestigious Islamic Architecture and history of the city. The tour was also aimed at the on-going Urban Design problem of Hazratganj street.

Day 1, Monday, 24th Feb’ 20: On the First day, Students group explored the Urban Design stretch of Hazratganj street. They discovered the distance from KD Singh Babu Stadium Metro Station to the street on foot observing the traffic movement, road network, green and open spaces, architectural style, various public buildings and their importance discussing the existing problems. On their way, they visited St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a huge and famous landmark of Hazratganj street.

Day 2, 25th Feb’ 20: The day started with a visit to the Government College of Architecture where students interacted with others and were shown the works of the college. They were given an excursion of the studios of different batches and various rooms like thesis room, art room, 3D printing room, library, cafeteria, construction workshop, etc. the students learned different skills of presentation. Then the students were then released to study the Hazratganj stretch after lunch.

Day 3, 26th Feb’20: The students were made to visit one of the finest Architectural examples of Mughal Design- Bada Imambara in old Lucknow. The complex consisted of Baoli, the main building, and Asifi Masjid. The mesmerizing historical background, architectural techniques, building materials, etc of the structure were explained by a guide. They also experienced the labyrinth “Bhool Bhulaiya” which is the main feature of the Imambara that housed the soldiers for security purposes. The Baoli being connected to the Gomti river was also used to keep an eye on the enemies without being discovered. Then the students passed through the Rumi Darwaza, the entrance gateway perceiving the grandeur of the city. The students also went to see the Chowk, one of the oldest parts of Lucknow city and its conversion to a commercial area famous for its Chikankari work.

Day 4, 27th Feb’ 20: The group witnessed the Residency, which is famous for its inheritance by the British Resident General who was a representative in the court of Nawab. They were given a glimpse of the museum depicting the old times followed by a documentary briefing its existence and purpose. The complex had various structures such as Begham Hazrat Mahal, British Houses, Surgeon’s House, Graveyard, Mosque, Museum, Cathedral, etc. All of the structures spoke their stories in the form of bullet and cannon marks. Students were then released in the campus to perceive the other parts of the Residency by sketching and photography.

Marine Drive, was a calm and leisure walkway amidst the humdrum of the city where one could ponder and contemplate. The students had a walk and spent leisure time eating and enjoying camel rides.

Day 5, 28th Feb’ 20: The day started with the visit of Hazratganj Street where students were made to observe different types of users at different time intervals in the morning. They went to JPNIC- Jai Prakash Narayan International Center, where they learned about one of the prominent political leaders- Jai Prakash, his ideology and theory. Later on, the trip was concluded with the visit of the Gomti Riverfront Park having a close-up of the present condition of Gomti river. The students were then released to shop, enjoy and explore the city.
