Two-day Training Workshop for Indian Forest Service (IFS) Officers

Global climate change is of growing concern and a wide spread phenomenon. Climate change scientists are in agreement that the world is slowly warming up because of accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere due to excessive fossil fuel use and deforestation. Tropical forest clearing accounts for roughly 20 per cent of the anthropogenic carbon emissions and destroys globally significant carbon sinks (IPCC, 2007). A study from UN reveals that destruction of forests, adds almost six billion tons of carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere each year. Forests do play a crucial link in providing large carbon sink. Trees and forests remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, converting same during photosynthesis to carbon which is stored in the form of wood and vegetation, a process referred to as carbon sequestration. Encouraging CDM afforestation/reforestation projects is an important way of mitigating climate change. However, developing CDM forestry project requires specialized training.
