Two-day National Seminar
on

"Marketing and Export of Bamboo and Its Products: System, Challenges and Potential"
(February 13-14, 2013)


Bamboo being renewal source of biomass is the most diverse group of plants in the grass family, which finds its diverse application in the day to day life from the very beginning of civilization. Utilization of bamboo is multifold. Bamboo has strength, flexibility, durability and versatility.

Bamboo based post harvest production and processing operation are a source of remunerative employment. Marketing of bamboo products is a specialized task requiring focused systematic approach besides developing background and forward linkages for integration in the entire chain of bamboo – right from nursery development, plantation and harvesting product design development branding and marketing. However, the enormous gap between demand and supply of bamboo and its fluctuating yield is a major road block for his full potential of total production in respect of an estimated value over Rs.50, 000/- crore per year by 2025.

Considering the above, Amity School of Natural Resources and Development, Amity University Uttar Pradesh had organized the above Two-day National Seminar. This National Seminar was sponsored by National Bamboo Mission, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India with Co-sponsorship from Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textile, Government of India; United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), New Delhi and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Mumbai.

53 Delegates from across the country representing IFS Officers, State Bamboo Mission Directorate, NGOs, Scientists, Senior Officers from Bank and various organization as also Entrepreneurs from Bamboo related industry and trade had attended.

Hon’ble Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Government of India Dr. Charan Das Mahant had graced the Inaugural function with his benign presence as Chief Guest for his thought provoking keynote address. Dr. Mahant, the Hon’ble Minister of State had also formally declared open the Bamboo Handicrafts Exhibition. Wonderful various exhibits of bamboo based products were prominently and discreetly displayed under proper focused light under the overall guidance of National Center for Design & Product Development, New Delhi. The Minister showed keen interest while going through the stall and examining the exhibits. This bamboo handicrafts exhibition was widely appreciated by the delegates and student community.

22 papers were presented by renowned persons in their respective fields. Concerned topical issues were debated in the technical session and various recommendations emerged during the valedictory session after detailed discussion and brainstorming.
