Thinking Skills and Cambridge
The UCLES group’s experience in developing syllabus and assessment of material for Thinking Skills has been recognised in the commissioning of the group to develop a test as complement to A level for applicants to the medical & veterinary science faculties initially in Cambridge but from 2003 onwards for students apply to Oxford & University College, London.
This test, known as the Biomedical Admissions Test, was developed by UCLES in collaboration with a consortium from Oxford, London & Cambridge. Although designed specifically for biomedical science subjects, similar tests have the capacity to be used in other faculties. One such test is currently being used as part of the admissions process in Cambridge for computer scientist.
CIE is continuing to plan leading role in the further development of Thinking Skills assessment in anticipation of its growing importance in the curriculum.
The AS Thinking Skills syllabus provides a curriculum designed to encourage the development of Thinking Skills in young people. The syllabus is examined by a multiple choice paper & an essay paper.
As a result of the growing recognition of Thinking Skills in higher education and the realisation of the broader benefits to students in learning these skills, an increasing number of CIE Centres around the world are offering Thinking Skills as a part of their curriculum. It will prove to be one of the major developments in pre-university education in the coming years.
