International Conference on "Millet Fusion: Cultivating Sustainability, Nourishing Nations"

Overview

In the 2024-25 fiscal year, the Ministry of Agriculture has been allocated Rs 1,32,470 crore, which accounts for 2.7% of the central government’s total budget, reflecting a 5% increase from the revised estimate for 2023-24. India, one of the top five millet exporters globally, has seen its global millet exports rise from $400 million in 2020 to $700 million in 2024.The growing global focus on sustainable agriculture and food security has brought millets, an ancient group of cereals, to the forefront of discussions on nutrition, climate resilience, and biodiversity. Millets, which include sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, and other small grains, have been a staple food in various parts of the world for centuries, particularly in Asia and Africa. However, their cultivation and consumption have declined in recent decades due to the preference for more commercially dominant crops like rice and wheat. In the context of climate change, millets offer significant advantages. They are highly resilient to extreme weather conditions such as drought, high temperatures, and poor soils, making them a vital crop for ensuring food security in the face of increasing environmental challenges. Additionally, millets are nutritionally superior, rich in essential nutrients such as fiber, iron, calcium, and antioxidants. Their low glycemic index makes them an ideal food for managing diabetes and other lifestyle diseases, which are on the rise globally.

Recognizing the multifaceted benefits of millets for nutrition, sustainability, and economic growth, Amity University, Noida in collaboration with CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, is organizing a global conference. The "MilletFusion: Cultivating Sustainability, Nourishing Nations Beyond 2024" conference will be a dedicated platform for researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and farmers to share knowledge, innovations, and strategies related to millet cultivation, processing, and promotion. This event aims to foster international cooperation, inspire initiatives, and chart actionable solutions to mainstream millets into global diets.

The event is jointly organized by Amity University, Noida and CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.. The event is planned to be held at Amity University, Noida in co-ordination with CSIR-IHBT resonating with the vision and mission of both the organizations. Proposal for collaboration is under consideration by ICAR. CSIR-IHBT has the mandate to discover, innovate, develop and disseminate the processes, products and technologies from Himalayan bioresources for society, industry, environment and academia. Further Amity university's state-of-the-art facilities, diverse academic community, and strategic location in the Delhi/NCR region make it a key hub for fostering discussions on millets and food security.
