Global Citizen India Partners with Amity University for Eliminating avoidable blindness.

The mission is to Eliminate avoidable blindness.

Today, the number of visually impaired people in the world stands at 385 million. Believe it or not, 133 million of these people are in India. The ratio of ophthalmologists to people in India is at an abysmal 1:219,000 in rural areas and 1:25,000 in urban areas. A majority of our population is vulnerable to eye problems that can lead to blindness, which is actually completely avoidable through screening, awareness and medical care.

It is to strive towards an India free from large scale avoidable blindness, that Amity Mission 'Eliminate Avoidable Blindness' was launched on the 12th of December 2012 by the Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences, Amity Medical School, Amity University Haryana.

Objectives :

The main objective of this initiative is to eliminate avoidable blindness through effective screening, diagnosis & management of visual impairment, with the main focus on geographical areas with poor penetration of healthcare services.

Under this program, more than 50,000 patients have been screened for various eye diseases through door-to-door screening, school eye camps, outreach camps and the eye clinic facility at the Amity University Haryana campus. One of the most significant achievements has been treatment for over 3,000 patients across rural areas The cost of the initiative was borne by Amity University, and is a glowing example of successful delivery of low-cost healthcare at the grassroots level.

The success of these endeavors has encouraged Amity University to expand the scope of the Amity Vision 'Eliminate Avoidable Blindness' initiative to national and international levels.
