Design, analysis and modeling of sounding rocket

Designed by a group of students of B. Tech. (Aerospace), David Devassy, Rishabh Aggarwal and R.S. Arun Babu, this project’s objective was to design and fabricate a single stage rocket that can carry out a quick survey of the atmosphere till 3000 meters by measuring the altitude, temperature and corresponding pressure values. Supervised by Mr. Sumit Krishna, students carried out a static test of the fabricated model to check the propellant’s burning efficiency, thrust generated and a total burn time. Trajectory calculations were also estimated for successful recovery. Its key characteristics included capacity to attain an altitude of 3000 meters, consumes locally available potassium nitrate and sucrose as propellants and usage of high grade steel pipe tubes (Steel Tube IN1020) as structure and simple avionics.
