Amity Institute of Education, New Delhi organised a workshop on the theme “Training to become a Reflective Teacher" on 2^nd April, 2014. The participants of this workshop came from Nine (9) Universities and Twenty- Three (23) colleges of NCR. Theses Universities were:

The inauguration of this workshop was done by Prof. M.C. Sharma, Director, School of Education, IGNOU, Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President – Amity Science Technology and Innovation, AUUP and Shri A. K. Tripathi Principal , Balwant Rai Mehta School , G.K- II, New Delhi.

Shri A. K. Tripathi in his presentation on the theme talked about the spiritual aspect and the need to be reflective in these difficult times. He quoted Sant Kabir and Bhagwat Geeta while emphasizing the important role a teacher has to play as the education scenario is changing very fast.

Dr. W. Selvamurthy gave keynote address on the theme of the workshop. While talking about science, technology and innovation he gradually connected the modernity, its advantages with education and teacher education. Starting with National vision 2020 to realize our ambitions of becoming a strong nation and enlightened citizen, he gradually shifted his presentation to an important question- “Who we are”? and why do we think about improving teaching as well as improving the teacher and the way a student learns. In his presentation he suggested that a reflective teacher must essentially introspect and this introspection should gradually form a reflective cycle. This reflective cycle should pin point the reflection variables and on the basis of these variables, action plan has to be drawn. While talking about the role of a teacher, he narrated some good qualities expected of teachers and also gave some suggestions for them. Dr. Selvamurthy talked about the professional attitude of teachers and concluded his presentation by giving some tips on managing stress and igniting interest in the young minds towards learning.

Prof. M.C. Sharma, Director, School of Education, IGNOU, concluded the session by endorsing the views of the earlier speakers and reinforcing the need of reflection while preparing teachers in teacher training programme.

The students who had come to attend the workshop were divided into five groups and were given the following three questions for a brain storming session and role play.

1) Who is a Reflective Teacher?

2) Why do we need Reflective Teachers?

3) What are the Traits that the Reflective teachers must possess?

The group leaders of each group gave a presentation on the basis of these three questions on behalf of their entire group.

In the concluding session, Prof. Raj Rani, from Department of Teacher Education & Extensions, NCERT, interacted with the participants and explained the word reflection in teaching and its need and importance in today’s times. Having contributed in preparing the document for NCERT on reflective teachers, she gave an insight into the very purpose of preparing reflected teachers.

The valedictory address was given by Prof. Saroj Sharma. While quoting from national curriculum framework on teacher education (NCFTE), Prof. Sharma briefly explained the concept behind preparing reflective teachers and its importance.

A certificate of participation was given to all the participants of workshop.
