3-day National Conference on ‘Recent Trends in Mental Health’

Amity Institute of Behavioural Health & Allied Sciences, New Delhi together with the HOPE Foundation, Gurgaon held a 3 day National Conference on “Recent Trends in Mental Health in India” from 2-4th May, 2005 at the Amity Yasho Bhawan Campus, New Delhi. On this occasion, Dr. J.N. Chaudhary, Chairman- VIMHANS, Delhi was felicitated with the AMITY GOLDEN AWARD for his pioneering contribution in the field of mental health.

Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Ritnand Balved Education Foundation (RBEF) & President -Amity Institute of Behavioural health & Allied Science (AIBHAS) while wishing the conference a great success said that, “Mental health of any country’s population is as important as physical health. Amity has been giving considerable emphasis on the psychological aspects of health and thus, has established two institutions: Amity Institute of Behavioural Health & Allied Sciences & Amity Institute of Behavioural Allied Science, which will impart the best education, i.e.; academics, training, practice, research and development in the field of mental health.” He further added, “This conference is the Institute’s efforts to transform my vision into reality that is, bringing all the experts working in the field of mental health on a platform to share the various innovations that they have made to bring succor and relief to the millions of mentally ill persons.”

Dr. Deepak Raheja, Director, Hope Foundation, Gurgaon gave a brief account on mental health scenario in India. The key note address at the inauguration ceremony was given by Prof. (Dr.) Meena Gupta, Director- Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences wherein she focused on the mental health concerns in neurological disorders. Prof .(Dr.) Ravi Nehru, Professor & Head, Department of Neurology, G.B. Pant Hospital, New Delhi spoke about the nature and scope of Neuropsychology and according to him, it may soon be pointless to draw any definitive distinction between neuropsycology, neuropsychiatry and behavioural neurology.

Prof. Dr. Sawant Parischa, Professor & Head, Clinical Psychology Department, National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences, the Guest of Honour on this occasion presented case studies on recent advances in Reincarnation Issues.

The various other issues discussed upon were –Adolescent Mental Health, Legal and Human Rights Issues in Mental Health, Depression and the use of Defense Mechanism, Efficacy of Homeopathic Treatment of Insomnia Management, and early indicators of poor Scholastic Performance and Behavioural problems in children.

Several eminent speakers from different fields were present to deliberate upon the subject, some of which are Dr. R.K. Srivastava, Additional Director General, Directorate of Health Services, Govt. of India, New Delhi; Dr. Manju Mehta, Professor of Clinical Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, AIIMS, New Delhi; Shri. Vivek Bharti, Criminal Lawyer- Delhi High Court; Dr. Priti Dhawan, Sr. Lecturer, Department of Psychology, Lady Shriram College, New Delhi. Apart from these prominent people, the students and professionals from various fields participated in this conference.

Dr. Vimala Veera Raghavan, Director General- AIBHAS congratulated all the speakers present and thanked them for their support in making this conference such a big success and appreciated their initiative to interact with students.
