Faculty Development Program on "Role of Translation in Inter-Cultural Communication"

A Faculty Development Program titled  “ Role of Translation in Inter-Cultural Communication” was organized by Amity School of Language, Amity University Gurugram on 20th July 2018. Prof (Dr) Ganga Sahay Meena, Associate Professor, Center for Indian Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi was the invited resource person for the conduct of this FDP. Prof. Meena is well known for his contribution of using translation as a pedagogical method to be used in classrooms in a more systematic manner. Prof. Meena is also the part of the editorial board of more than eight peer-reviewed research journals.

Prof (Dr) Ashok Kumar Tiku, Head of the Department, Amity School of Language, inaugurated the program and welcomed the guest. Introducing the guest, Prof. Ashok Tiku shared that the resource person,  Prof. Meena is an eminent scholar of translation and tribal studies at JNU, New Delhi and he has recently been appointed as ICSSR Chair at University of Ankara, Turkey by the Government of India for a tenure of two years. During his tenure, he will explore the prospects for Amity University students visiting University of Ankara, Turkey for short-term stays under ‘Cultural Exchange Programmes’.

During his session, Professor Meena spoke on the history, process and relevance of translation and its studies in India. Further, he also adumbrated on the contribution of ‘translation’ in helping eliminate the prejudices present in any culture; due to less or almost no knowledge about other cultures. Thus translation and its studies play an important role in by highlighting the similarities between the two cultures and hence help in eliminating prejudices against any culture. He concluded his session with a piece of advice for all faculty members of foreign languages. He remarked that a faculty of foreign languages with students from diverse back-grounds, should make an effort to apply translation as a pedagogical method in our classrooms so that the student learning experience is enhanced.
