3rdAmity National Moot Court Competition

3rd Amity National Moot Court Competition was organized by Amity Law School of Amity University Gurugram in association with Knowledge and Research Partners SCC Online® and National Commission for Women, Food Partner Mother Dairy and Media Partner Legal Bites from 9th-11th March, 2018 to provide a valuable opportunity to hone both their written and oral advocacy skills in this competitive field through hypothetical case in their hands and provide an opportunity to research, frame arguments, prepare briefs (popularly called memorials) and appear before Judges to argue the case. 3rd National Moot Court Competition witnessed the participation of 40 teams from the finest Law Colleges from across the Nation. Shri Ram Jethmalani, Senior Advocate Supreme Court of India and Member Parliament (Rajya Sabha) inaugurated the 3rd Amity National Moot Court Competition. Other honorable guest present during the inaugural session were Padma Shri Shri T.K. Viswanathan, Secretary General 15th Lok Sabha, Ms. Sushma Sahu, Member, National Commission for Women, Ms. Ruby Yadav, Mrs. Universe 2015 and Member Executive Committee - Delhi State BJP,  Prof. (Dr.) P.B. Sharma, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gurugram.

In his welcome address Prof. (Dr.) P.B. Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, welcomed all the distinguished guest and said that, “Our Legal education is required to create lawyers who would practice this privilege with utmost sincerity and commitment.” Prof. Sharma emphasized the need for raising our voices against gender bias and encouraged the Law students to create awareness with respect to women’s rights amongst the youth.

Shri Ram Jethmalani encouraged the young budding lawyers, with his words of wisdom, to be percipient and prudent and shared that being part of Moot competitions reminds him of his younger days. Shri Jethmalani on the issues involved in the Moot Court Competition said that it was the need of the hour for the youth to be involved in issues related to women’s rights.

Padma Shri Shri T.K. Visvanathan in his address stated that, “the Pedagogy is changing. Internet is changing everything. There is a lot of information available around you but along with it, comes the responsibility to protect it from theft.” He praised Amity Law School for organizing such a competitive event that helps garnering the budding lawyers into hotshot advocates.

Ms. Ruby Yadav in her speech has advised all women to raise their voice against domestic violence and not to bear this silently.

Ms. Sushma Sahu shared her real life and first hand experiences with the gathering. She gave factual data of cases of marital rape and domestic violence in recent years, which she felt were not a good sign for a developing country like India. Ms. Sahu also emphasized on changing Laws for benefit of men in society who are facing harassment due to false cases been registered in their names. She applauded the initiative of ALS for taking such a critical issue for discussion among the youth.

Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.), Director Amity Law School thanked the Chief Guest and the dignitaries for sparing so much of their precious time for the event. He gave his concluding remarks of inaugural function after the dignitaries revealing the Winning Trophy and various other prizes during the Inaugural Function. 

After the Inaugural Function, the Researcher Test was conducted, wherein the participants were tested on their researching skills. The pattern of the test was a combination of objective as well as subjective questions on the Moot Problem.

Second day session begin with the address by Ms. Nupur Sharma, Advocate and BJP Spokesperson. In her address, she encouraged the students to participate in Moot Court Competitions, since such competitions develop their skills as Lawyers. Ms. Nupur was loud and clear on women empowerment. She had stated that there should be a swift upliftment in abortion laws and that it is the prime time to amend the laws relating to child marriage and that of marital rape.

The second day of the competition, kick started with the Preliminary Round where the participants despite being grilled by the learned and competent Judges, did their level best to put forward their respective cases. Which was followed by Quarter Final round where the team from:

  • School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore
  •  ILS Law College, Pune
  • Government Law College, Mumbai
  •  School of Law, Sastra University, Tamil Nadu
  • CMR School of Legal Studies, Bengaluru
  • School of Excellence in Law, Tamil Nadu
  • CNLU, Patna
  •  VIPS, Delhi

The Competition saw the arguing, presentation and persuasive skills of the teams in the Quarter Final Rounds. The Judges were highly impressed by the advocacy skills of the Mooters. The teams were well versed with the moot problem and it was a neck to neck competition to advance to the Semi-Finals. The teams to make it to the Semi-Finals were:

  • Government Law College, Mumbai
  • ILS Law College, Pune
  • School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore
  • School of Law, Sastra University, Tamil Nadu

Final Day show the remarkable presence of Mr. Qayam-u-din, Advocate Delhi High Court, Mr. Atul Sud, Director Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Perfetti Van Melle India Pvt. Ltd., Ms. Shivani Luthra Lohiya, Advocate, Ms.Parvinder, Advocate Delhi High Court for the grueling Semi-Finals and team from ILS, Pune and School of law, Christ University, Bangalore were successful in advancing to the Finals of the Competition. 

The Final Round was judged by a Bench of five Judges that comprised of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Swatanter Kumar, Mr. Anand Grover,Dr.Mukulita Vijayavarghiya , Ms. Geeta Luthra  andMs. Bindu K. Nair.

The most awaited Final Round was viewed by curious students agog to know who bags the winning trophy. The Final Round was held in the Moot Court Room of Amity Law School and attended by Maj. Gen. G.S. Bal(Retd.). Dean of Student’s Welfare, Faculty members, all the participating teams and students of Amity Law School.

The Final Round of the competition was fiercely fought between the two Semi finalists. The Bench grilled the Mooters on every aspect of their arguments. The teams were well prepared and impressed the Judges with their legal acumen. The teams were judged on various aspects like presentation skills, knowledge of the subject, time taken in answering the queries put up by the Judges and the legal reasoning presented by the Mooters. 

The Chief Guest of the Valedictory Ceremony of the 3rdAmity National Moot Court Competition was Hon’ble Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar, former Judge of Supreme Court of India. Ms. Mukulita Vijayavarghiya, Ms. Geeta Luthra and Smt.Bindu K. Nair also graced the occasion. The dignitaries on dais also included Maj. Gen. G.S. Bal (Retd.), Dean of Student Welfare and Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.), Director, Amity Law School.

Hon’ble Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar presented his views on the advantage to be a law student of this era. He quoted that “Nowadays you have events like this in which you can see the reality of interactions in court room itself while studying in Law School. If this was in our time, the judiciary might be at a different level.

The awards ceremony was vociferously cheered by all present. Award of Best Draftsman went to Lakshay Anand and Deepanshu Tuteja, students of Amity Law School, for their moot proposition being selected as the best among all invited for the competition. The Winning Trophy was lifted by the star team of the event School of Law, Christ University and ILS, Pune had to be content with the Runner’s Up Trophy. Few other awards given for Best Researcher, Nakul Mehta, Law College, Dehradun, Best Mooter, Tanya Chib, GLC, Mumbai, Best Memorial, Symbiosis Law School, Pune.                     

All the participating teams were also presented with participating mementos and certificates by Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.), Director Amity Law School.

The 3rdAmity National Moot Court Competition concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.), Director Amity Law School. He thanked all the guests and dignitaries for gracing the occasion and encouraging the students with their insights.

The three-day competition came to an end with a cultural evening and a DJ Night organized for the participating teams and the Students of Amity Law School.
